<2/”>a href=”https://exam.pscnotes.com/5653-2/”>The formation of the Nizam Rashtra Andhra Jana Sangham (NRAJS) marked a significant turning point in the socio-political landscape of Hyderabad State during the early 20th century. Established in 1923 under the Nizam’s rule, the NRAJS emerged as a powerful voice for the Telugu-speaking Population, advocating for their cultural, linguistic, and political rights.

Background and Context

Hyderabad State, ruled by the Nizam, was a diverse region with a significant Telugu-speaking population. However, the Nizam’s administration favored Urdu as the Official Language and promoted a Persianised culture, marginalizing the Telugu language and culture. This led to discontent among the Telugu-speaking people, who felt their identity and heritage were being suppressed.

In response to this cultural and linguistic marginalization, several Telugu associations and organizations began to emerge in the early 20th century. These organizations aimed to promote Telugu language, literature, and culture, and to advocate for the rights of Telugu speakers in the state.

Formation of the NRAJS

In 1921, a prominent Telugu leader named Madapati Hanumantha Rao founded the Andhra Jana Sangham, a socio-cultural organization that aimed to uplift the Telugu-speaking people of Hyderabad State. The Andhra Jana Sangham quickly gained popularity and established branches across the state, mobilizing the Telugu community and raising awareness about their issues.

Recognizing the growing influence of the Andhra Jana Sangham, the Nizam’s government decided to co-opt the movement and channel its energy towards constructive activities. In 1923, the Nizam’s government facilitated the formation of the Nizam Rashtra Andhra Jana Sangham (NRAJS) as an umbrella organization to unite all the Telugu associations in the state.

Madapati Hanumantha Rao played a crucial role in the establishment of the NRAJS, and he became its first secretary. The NRAJS was initially envisioned as a non-political organization focused on promoting Telugu language, literature, and culture. However, it soon became a platform for voicing the political aspirations of the Telugu-speaking people.

Activities and Achievements

The NRAJS engaged in a wide range of activities to promote the Telugu language and culture, and to advocate for the rights of Telugu speakers in Hyderabad State. Some of its notable activities and achievements include:

  1. Organizing Andhra Conferences: The NRAJS organized annual Andhra conferences, which served as platforms for cultural exchange, literary discussions, and political debates. These conferences brought together Telugu leaders, intellectuals, and activists from across the state, fostering a sense of unity and common purpose.
  2. Establishing Libraries and Reading Rooms: The NRAJS established libraries and reading rooms in various parts of the state to promote Telugu literature and provide access to educational Resources for the Telugu-speaking population.
  3. Promoting Telugu Education: The NRAJS advocated for the introduction of Telugu as a medium of instruction in schools and colleges. It also established Telugu-medium schools and colleges to provide quality education to Telugu-speaking students.
  4. Advocating for Political Rights: The NRAJS demanded greater representation for Telugu speakers in the Nizam’s administration and legislature. It also advocated for the formation of a separate Andhra province within Hyderabad State.
  5. Mobilizing Public Opinion: The NRAJS utilized various platforms, such as newspapers, magazines, and public meetings, to mobilize public opinion in favor of the Telugu cause. It also organized protests and demonstrations to voice its demands.

Impact and Legacy

The NRAJS played a crucial role in raising the consciousness of the Telugu-speaking people in Hyderabad State and galvanizing them into a political force. It provided a platform for the articulation of Telugu identity and aspirations, and it paved the way for the formation of the Andhra Mahasabha, a political party that championed the cause of a separate Andhra state.

The NRAJS also contributed significantly to the development of Telugu language, literature, and culture in Hyderabad State. Its efforts to promote Telugu education and establish libraries and reading rooms helped to create a vibrant intellectual and cultural Environment for the Telugu-speaking community.

Although the NRAJS was initially co-opted by the Nizam’s government, it eventually became a powerful voice for the Telugu people and played a crucial role in the socio-political transformation of Hyderabad State. Its legacy continues to inspire and influence the Telugu-speaking community in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
