Environment Pollution: An Introduction

<<2/”>a >a href=”https://exam.pscnotes.com/Environment-pollution/”>ENVIRONMENT POLLUTION is  defined as ‘an addition or excessive addition of certain materials to the physical environment (water, air and lands), making it less fit or unfit for life’.

Pollutants are the materials or factors, which cause adverse effect on the natural quality of any component of the environment.

Classifications

  1. According to the form in which they persist after release into the environment.
  • Primary pollutants: These persist in the form in which they are added to the environment e.g. DDT, plastic.
  • Secondary Pollutants: These are formed by interaction among the primary pollutants. For example, peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) is formed by the interaction of nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons.
  1. According to their existence in nature.
  • Quantitative Pollutants: These occur in nature and become pollutant when their concentration reaches beyond a threshold level. E.g. carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide.
  • Qualitative Pollutants: These do not occur in nature and are man-made. E.g. fungicides, herbicides, DDT etc.
  1. According to their nature of disposal.
  • Biodegradable Pollutants: Waste products, which are degraded by microbial action. E.g. sewage.
  • Non-biodegradable Pollutants: Pollutants, which are not decomposed by microbial action. E.g. plastics, glass, DDT, salts of heavy metals, radioactive substances etc
  1. According to origin
  • Natural
  • Anthropogenic

The environment is the natural world that surrounds us. It includes the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat, and the land we live on. The environment is essential for our survival, and it is important to protect it.

There are many different types of environmental pollution. Air Pollution is caused by the release of harmful gases and particles into the air. Water Pollution is caused by the release of harmful chemicals and sewage into water bodies. Land pollution is caused by the improper disposal of solid waste. Noise Pollution is caused by excessive noise from vehicles, machinery, and other sources. Light pollution is caused by excessive artificial light. Thermal pollution is caused by the release of hot water into water bodies. Radiation pollution is caused by the release of radioactive materials into the environment. Chemical pollution is caused by the release of harmful chemicals into the environment. Biological pollution is caused by the introduction of harmful organisms into the environment. Solid waste pollution is caused by the improper disposal of solid waste. Hazardous waste pollution is caused by the improper disposal of hazardous waste. Nuclear waste pollution is caused by the improper disposal of nuclear waste. Marine pollution is caused by the release of harmful pollutants into the marine environment. Ozone Depletion is caused by the release of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) into the Atmosphere. Global Warming is caused by the release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Acid Rain is caused by the release of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides into the atmosphere. Eutrophication is caused by the release of excess nutrients into water bodies. Desertification is the process of land becoming desert. Deforestation is the process of cutting down trees. Overpopulation is the condition of having too many people in a given area. Overconsumption is the act of consuming more Resources than are needed. Climate change is the long-term change in the Earth’s climate. Environmental Degradation is the deterioration of the environment. Environmental sustainability is the ability to meet our own needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Environmental protection is the act of protecting the environment from harm. Environmental management is the process of managing the environment in a sustainable way. Environmental science is the study of the environment. Environmental engineering is the application of engineering principles to the solution of environmental problems. Environmental law is the body of law that deals with the environment. Environmental policy is the set of principles that guide government action on environmental issues. Environmental ethics is the study of the moral relationship between humans and the environment. Environmental Justice is the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies. Education/”>Environmental Education is the process of teaching people about the environment and how to protect it. Environmental activism is the act of taking action to protect the environment. Environmentalism is the philosophy of protecting the environment.

There are many things that we can do to protect the environment. We can reduce, reuse, and recycle. We can conserve energy and water. We can use less plastic. We can drive less and walk, bike, or take public transportation more. We can support businesses that are environmentally friendly. We can vote for candidates who support environmental protection. We can contact our elected officials and let them know that we care about the environment.

The environment is important to us all. It is our home. We need to protect it for ourselves and for future generations.

What is pollution?

Pollution is the introduction of harmful substances or energy into the environment. Pollution can take the form of chemical substances or energy, such as noise, heat or light. Pollutants, the components of pollution, can be either foreign substances/energies or naturally occurring contaminants. Pollution is often classed as point source or nonpoint source pollution. Air pollution, water pollution, Soil contamination, noise pollution and light pollution are some of the different types of environmental pollution.

What are the causes of pollution?

The main causes of pollution are human activities, such as burning fossil fuels, deforestation, and agriculture. Other causes of pollution include natural disasters, such as volcanic eruptions and forest fires.

What are the effects of pollution?

Pollution can have a number of negative effects on the environment, including:

  • Climate Change: Pollution can contribute to climate change by trapping heat in the atmosphere.
  • Air pollution: Air pollution can cause respiratory problems, heart disease, and cancer.
  • Water pollution: Water pollution can cause gastrointestinal problems, reproductive problems, and neurological problems.
  • Soil contamination: Soil contamination can make food unsafe to eat and can also harm Plants and animals.
  • Noise pollution: Noise pollution can cause hearing loss, Stress, and sleep problems.
  • Light pollution: Light pollution can disrupt the natural cycles of plants and animals.

What can be done to reduce pollution?

There are a number of things that can be done to reduce pollution, including:

  • Reduce, reuse, and recycle: This is the most important thing that individuals can do to reduce pollution. By reducing the amount of waste that we produce, we can reduce the amount of pollution that is created.
  • Use RENEWABLE ENERGY sources: Renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, do not produce pollution. By using renewable energy sources, we can reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, which are a major source of pollution.
  • Conserve water: Water pollution is a major problem, and we can all help to reduce it by conserving water. We can do this by taking shorter showers, fixing any leaks in our homes, and watering our lawns less often.
  • Drive less: Cars are a major source of air pollution. We can reduce air pollution by driving less. We can do this by walking, biking, or taking public transportation whenever possible.
  • Recycle electronics: Electronics contain harmful chemicals that can pollute the environment if they are not properly disposed of. We can help to reduce pollution by recycling electronics.
  • Support environmental organizations: There are many organizations that are working to reduce pollution. We can help by supporting these organizations with our time, Money, or both.

What is the future of pollution?

The future of pollution is uncertain. If we do not take action to reduce pollution, it is likely to continue to increase. This will have a number of negative effects on the environment and on human Health. However, if we take action to reduce pollution, we can improve the quality of the environment and protect human health.
