Centre committed to exploring waterways potential for NE’s benefit: Sonowal


Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said the Central government is working to explore the full potential of inland waterways as it is an important means of Communication for the development of the interior parts. He also underlined the role of waterways in ensuring greater economic vibrancy in the North Eastern region. After reviewing the progress of waterways projects for Barak Valley of Assam on Saturday, the Union Minister of , Shipping and Waterways said, “Northeast India is rich and its richness must reach the world in order to make people aware of our rich heritage and Resources. Inland Waterways comes as a wonderful avenue for us – the people of Northeast – to take our produce out into the global trade map in an efficient and economical way.”

The Union minister reviewed various projects under implementation around the North East region by the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI). He reviewed the progress made on the renovation of existing shore facilities at Badarpur terminal and renovation of existing shore facilities at Karimganj terminal. Sonowal directed the officials to take all necessary measures, including dredging, in order to ensure smooth passage of cargo vessels on National Waterways 2 (Brahmaputra) and NW 16 (Barak).

Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD), a Capripox virus disease affecting cattle, buffalo and goat, which was detected in Odisha in the aftermath of the Fani cyclone devastating the coast in May 2019, has re-emerged in the State, the Institute of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry (IVSAH) run by the SOA here, said on Tuesday.

The disease, which is contagious and transmitted by agents like blood-sucking fly, tick and Aedes mosquito, cause immense loss to farmers and keepers on account of death of animals, expenses on treatment and more than 20% reduction in milk production, Prof BramhadevPattnaik, Dean of IVSAH, said.

The genus Capripox virus has three virus-affecting ruminants, sheep pox, goat pox and LSD.

Prof Pattnaik said that though the disease was initially confined to Africa, it has spread to other continents subsequently. LSD was first detected in Odisha following the Fani cyclone and it has been epidemiologically ascertained that it has travelled to the State from Bangladesh through Jharkhand.

The virus, which is also known to get transmitted through contaminated feed and water, has made a re-appearance in Khordha and Puri districts.

Indian culture preserved equally in Kashi & Tamil Nadu: UP CM Yogi Adityanath

Drawing a parallel between Varanasi and Nadu, Chief MinisterYogi Adityanath said thatIndian culturehas been equally preserved in the ancient city and Tamil Nadu.

Speaking at the inauguration of theKashi Tamil Sangamamwhich was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Varanasi on Saturday, the CM said that through the Sangamam, people would get to witness the centuries-old bond of knowledge and ancient civilizational connect between the North and South.
The CM said that among the two languages that are believed to have emerged from the mouth ofLord Shiva, Tamil and Sanskrit are equally known for their rich literature.

Linking Varanasi with the South, the CM said that there is an ancient temple of Lord Vishwanath in Tenkasi, Tamil Nadu. Tenkasi means Kashi of the South, he said and added that due to the religious importance of Kashi, people from all parts of the country have been visiting the city for millennia.

Karnataka: Panel to decide on profit share for sugarcane farmers

In a step to fulfil a long pending demand of sugarcane growers, the state on Thursday set up a committee of technical experts who will work out a formula to share profits mills make from sugarcane byproducts with farmers.

The decision was taken at a meeting of mill owners and farmers chaired by sugar ministerShankar Patil Munenakopp. The committee headed by the sugar commissioner has been asked to submit its report in five days.

The panel will ascertain revenue generated from byproducts like ethanol and biogas and decide on a share for farmers. It will be paid every year. It will be over and above the fixed by the Centre. The government has taken a proactive step, but the committee must submit its report in five days or else we will resume our agitation, saidKuruburu Shanthakumar, president,Karnataka State Sugarcane Growers Association.

Farmers have been on a day-night strike for the past week, demanding Rs 3,500 per quintal of cane as opposed to theFRPof Rs 3,050 announced by the Centre. The minister said that the government has decided to set up a call centre to address issues of sugarcane growers.

Andhra Pradesh HC expresses concern over rise in number of contempt cases

TheAndhra Pradesh on Friday expressed concern over increasing number of contempt cases.

A bench comprising Justice A V Sesha Sai and Justice R Raghunandan Rao observed that more than 4,000 contempt cases have been filed this year alone. Consequently, the incidences of officials appearing before the high court is also on the rise, said the high court.

Several petitions filed by retired teachers before the high court for payment of pension benefits by considering the period worked before regularisation of service. They have joined as part-time teachers between 1985 and 1991. They moved AP Administrative Tribunal (APAT) seeking pension benefits and APAT ruled in favour of them.

Goa needs Rs 1.4 lakh crore to meet 100% renewable energy goal by 2050

Goa will require an of Rs 1.3 lakh crore till 2050 to implement its 100%RENEWABLE ENERGY(RE) plan in Goa and it has the potential to generate 15,000 jobs,Goa State Energy Action Plan(GSEAP) has revealed.

The yearly investment requirement is around Rs 4,400 crore which is around 5.6% of the statesGDPat the current price in 2020-21, GSEAP stated. The State Government has set a target of 100% RE by 2050 for all sectors in Goa.

It is estimated that the implementation of the 100% RE plan will create around 15,000 additional jobs (with a 5-year term) up to 2050. As a matter of fact, annually the state can create 500 jobs exclusively for solar and Wind Energy generation, the plan stated.

GSEAP said Goa is going to be oil dependent until 2050 if no action is taken withelectricitybeing supplied through coal-based power Plants (including central stations). Gas will remain insignificant if no scope of its supply and use are promoted and gas is a good alternative energy source with lower emissions and stable supply.

Centre hints at digital data collection in next Census for speed & accuracy

The ministry of Home affairs report (2021-2022) released in the first week of November said the data collection for the nextCensuswould be done digitally, though the Centre was yet to announce the launch of the programme.

Sources from the Census division said training was on in all states for digital data collection. The Census work was to be carried out in 2019 but it was delayed due to the pandemic. The Centre is yet to announce fresh dates, but training is on fordigital data collection, said a key official from the Census division. Earlier, home ministerAmit Shah, too, had said the next Census will be done digitally, with 100% accuracy.

The report released last week stated that digital data collection, Census management, and monitoring system, code directory geospatial technology, and other latest technologies would be used in the next Census.

Soon, IIT-Delhi centre to come up in Jhajjar, Haryana government gives nod

The approved the proposal to set up an extension campus of IIT-Delhi in Jhajjar,where 50 acres has been earmarked for researchers and students to focus on medical technologies and scientific breakthroughs in healthcare.

Conceived in 2013 but marred by delays, the extended campus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-Delhi) will be built in Badhsa village. It is expected to take at least three to five years for facilities to open in a staggered manner.

The state government aims to make the campus the first in India to focus on precision medicine and a place for experts to develop bioengineering solutions in healthcare.

Punjab Pavilion at IITF-2022 displays states progress

Punjab Pavilion, showcasing the states culture, and heritage, and displaying the industrial, agricultural, and handicrafts as well as products of various departments of the State is the main attraction for visitors during the ongoing Indian International Trade Fair (IITF) at New Delhis Pragati Maidan.

The theme of this years IITFs 41stedition, organized from November 14 to 27, is Vocal for Local, Local to Global, and the Punjab Government has also geared its theme along the same lines.
