Odisha CM raises demand for second AIIMS at Sundargarh

UnderliningSundargarhs contribution towards the Energy Security of the country in terms of coal production, chief ministerNaveen Patnaik raised the demand for establishment of Aiims in the district as Union coal and mines minister Pralhad Joshi met him atNaveen Niwas.
As NTPC has constructed an integrated campus of a 500-bedded hospital and 100-seatedmedical collegeat Sundargarh, the has been demanding to establish a second AIIMS by adding required Infrastructure to the existing facility.

The chief minister said Odisha produced 153.85 million tonnes of coal contributing to about 25 percent of countrys production in the year 2020-21.

Elephant Electrocution Prevention Initiatives Taken By Odisha

An amount of 445.75 crores was allocated by the Odisha government with the objective of preventing Elephant electrocution.

Highlights:

With the allocated funds, distribution companies would also restore bare wires across elephant passages and movement areas.
This initiative is aimed at preventing elephant deaths because of electrocution.
A 79000 interposing poles have been erected, and about 2,300 circuit bare Conductors have been replaced by covered ones.
The Companies and Forest Department have been asked to communicate regularly to obtain zero casualties of elephants.
Officials have also been aimed to involve the local Society in elephant protection and bring in the scheme for compensating the villagers, who would provide information regarding illegal hooking for poaching wild animals.
About 862 elephants have lost their lives between April 2010 August 2021. Out of this, about 16 % accounting for 135 elephants, died due to electrocution.

The Forest Department has proposed to take up plantations over an area of 1,50,000 hectares (ha) under different schemes including 50,000 ha under MGNREGS during the current planting season.

In view of deficit rainfall of 21 percent between June 1 and July 27, plantations have been undertaken in around 65,615 ha with planting of nearly 2.10 crore seedlings. In addition, nearly 76.6 lakh of seedlings have been distributed.

Ensure 54% quota for BCs in higher edu

Former Union Minister Srikant Jena has urged the (NCBC) for action so that a minimum of 27% and ideally 54% reservation for OBC/SEBC communities can be implemented immediately in Odisha in higher Education-sector”>Education sector from this academic year.

In a letter to the NCBC Chairman Hansraj Gangaram Ahir, Jena drew his attention to the deliberate negligence of the Odisha Government towards providing reservations to OBC and SEBC communities in higher education and Government jobs.

The OBC and SEBC communities comprise 54% of Odishas Population but receive 0% reservation in higher education despite the 2005 notification by the Government of India to provide a minimum of 27% reservation to the OBC communities. In addition, these communities only get 11.25% reservation in Government jobs instead of 27% as is the norm in all States of India. In contrast, 10% reservation in both higher education and Government jobs has been given under EWS category despite the general category population comprising only 6% in Odisha, said Jena.

Thirty four new courts to come up in Odisha

A committee led by finance minister Niranjan Pujari has given its nod to establish 34 new courts16 civil, 10 commercial and eight sessions courtsin the state, law minister Pratap Jena said.

Odisha currently has more than 700 . According to a reply given by Union law ministerKiren RijijuinLok Sabhaon March 25, total 15.45 lakh cases are pending cases in lower courts in Odisha. They include 12.38 lakh criminal cases and 3.07 lakh civil cases. Similarly, 1.89 lakh cases are pending in theOrissaHigh Court, the HCs pendency report as on April 29 on its website shows.

Jena said it has been governments constant endeavour to make Justice delivery accessible to people. The government has been working on new courts and better Infrastructure on a priority basis, he said.

Odisha best in climate action, worst in peace

Odishahas improved its overall rank in ‘s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Index 2020 that was released on Thursday. From 15th place in the last edition, the state now ranks 12th among states. Odisha’s overall score also improved from 58 last year to 61 this time.
Kerala (overall score 75) retained the top spot while Odisha Shares its position withChhattisgarhandNagaland. Like last year, Odisha remains a performer state, the category with scores between 50 and 64.

Those with scores of 65-99 are categorised frontrunners while those below 50 are aspirants. The states have been ranked on the basis of their performance on 16 different Sustainable Development Goals.

While Odisha tops in the country in categories like Climate action and life below water, it is the bottom state in peace, Justice and strong institutions.

It’s big score in disaster preparedness and low carbon dioxide footprint put Odisha as top performer in climate action. The state’s potential area developed under aquaculture rose from 28.5% last year to 41.7% this time, helping it to bag the top slot in life below water, measured only in nine coastal states.

Most Health related parameters in the state have improved while those relating to peace and justice have gone down. In the sustainable development goal for good health and well-being, Odisha’s maternal mortality ratio (per one lakh live births) has improved from 168 to 150 while institutional delivery improved from 57.8% to 97.2%. Under-five mortality fell from 48 to 44 per 1000 live births. HIV prevalence also fell from 0.06 per 1000 to 0.05.

In the category of clear water and sanitation, while source of drinking water for rural Population improved from 91.2% to 98.13%, Percentage of industries complying with waste water treatment norms fell from 91.71% to 83.16%. Manufacturing employees as total percentage of total EMPLOYMENT improved from 7.42% to 8.15%.

In gender Equality parameters, while crime against Women rose from 94.5 per one lakh women to 103.5 per lakh, sex ratio at birth fell from 938 to 933.

In SDG for peace, justice and strong institutions, the state’s murders per one lakh population increased from 2.95 to 3.10. Cognizable crime against children went up from 22.70 in one lakh to 49.90. Victims of human trafficking per 10 lakh also rose from 7.04% to 20.03%.

The net enrolment ratio or percentage share of children of primary school age who have been enrolled fell from 94.7% to 71.57%, while Unemployment ratio worsened from 7.1% to 7.6%.

Odisha may get 2nd Vande Bharat

Odisha is likely to get a second Vande Bharat Express train soon, said Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw here on Thursday.

Addressing a gathering at the Puri RAILWAY station on the occasion of flagging off of Puri-Howrah Vande Bharat Express, the Minister said, A second Vande Bharat Express train in Odisha is likely to run on the Puri-Bhubaneswar-Cuttack-Angul-Rourkela route.

He also said that there are plans to introduce Vande Metro service for the Puri-Bhubaneswar-Cuttack route.

After Vande Bharat, Vande Metro and Vande Sleeper trains would become operational.

Ensure adequate seeds for farmers: Odisha government

With thekharifseason set to begin soon, Agriculture-notes-for-state-psc-exams”>Agriculture minister Arun Kumar Sahoo has asked the officials to ensure the availability of adequate seeds and Fertilizers forfarmersin the state.

Officials said the has decided to disburse crop loans worth more than Rs 9,000 crore to support the farmers during the pandemic. More than 20 lakh farmers avail themselves of crop loans inOdishaevery year.

Kharif agricultural activities in Odisha generally start from Akshaya Tritiya, which will fall on May 15. Farmers perform the ceremonial act of sowing seeds in paddy fields on the occasion.

The state government has allowed sowing, nursery and land preparation, Irrigation, planting and harvesting during the lockdown. Distribution, sale and transportation of seeds have also been allowed. As 90% farmers are engaged in paddy cultivation, the field-level officers have been asked to encourage them to take up crop diversification.

While the state government had set a target of producing 96 lakh metric tonne (MT) of foodgrain during last years kharif , it is likely to increase it this time around.

CM to lead team to Japan for investment
