Karnataka elections: Survey finds 57% of respondents want to change state government

An exclusive survey-cum-opinion poll conducted by CVoter in Karnataka ahead of the May 10 assembly reveals that as many as 57 per cent of the respondents are angry with the State Government and want to change it.

As per the survey, just about 17 per cent of the potential voters say that they are not angry with the government and do not want to change it. There are other ominous signals for theBJPgovernment led by chief minister Basavraj Bommai. Almost 47 per cent of the respondents rate the performance of the chief minister as ‘poor’.

Centre’s Rs 48-crore development plans for Karnataka’s Chamundi Hills draw greens’ ire

The Union tourism ministry is proposing to invest Rs 48 crore under the Pilgrimage Rejuvenation And Spiritual Augmentation Drive (PRASAD) and Rs 100 crore under Swadesh scheme to give a major facelift to the tourism in the city.

However, activists have expressed disappointment over the way in which development activities are proposed at Chamundi Hills under the Prasad Scheme.

In 2019, it was first proposed to develop Chamundi Hills under the PRASAD scheme at the total estimated cost of Rs 60 crore.However, the proposal was changed following opposition.Green activists are opposing any development works which affect the sacred and sensitive temple area.

According to available documents, development activities are proposed in six sites atop Chamundi Hills under the PRASAD scheme.This includes works worth Rs 20.65 crore in the Chamundi Temple premises.Rs 5.37 crore will be spent on pilgrimage facilities and Mahishasura plaza, Rs 1.51 crore for the development of Devikere, Rs 4.34 crore for the Nandi statue pavilion development, Rs 4.16 crore for redevelopment of foothills and Rs 1.34 crore for the development of viewpoints.

Bengaluru Urban first district in Karnataka to clock 100% 2nd dose coverage

Bengaluru Urban, excludingBBMP areas, has emerged as the first district inKarnatakato have fully vaccinated 100% of its target Population againstCovid-19.

The population of 10.3 lakh has been double jabbed, according to data with the state Health and family welfare department.

However, in first dose coverage, the district has gone beyond its target and reached 129%, as many migrant labourers, workers from Nadu and neighbouring districts of Kolar, BBMP and the floating population have taken Vaccines in the districts primary health centres. The district has administered first dose to 13.2 lakh persons.

The challenge now is to cover the remaining nearly 3 lakh persons who have taken the first shot in the district, with the second dose, said J Manjunath, deputy commissioner, Bengaluru Urban. He added the target was set based on the 2011 census and given that 10 years have passed, the data may not be accurate.

Karnataka received 249% excess rain in November

In an all-time record,Karnatakareceived 249% excess rainfall in November, which caused flash floods and widespread damage to crops and .

Over 10,000 child marriages attempted in 5 years in Karnataka

Between April 2017 and March 2022, theKarnatakagovernment received complaints or tip-offs about 10,352 attempts of child marriage and 9,261 (about 90%) were prevented. In all, 860 FIRs were registered against people involved in getting minors married or at least tried it in the same period.

Experts and officials point out that most child marriages occur largely due to POVERTY, illiteracy, superstition or to ease what elders see as their burden of having a girl child.

Data of the Karnataka Women and child development department shows that 1,091 child marriages actually took place.

According to sections 9 and 13 of the Act, if the girl is a minor, then the man will be charged with a penalty and severe imprisonment. Sections 10 and 11 provide for imprisonment of at least 1-2 years for those supporting and encouraging such marriages aside from a penalty of Rs 1 lakh.

Karnataka govt considering to bring anti-conversion law: CM Basavaraj Bommai

Karnatakachief ministerBasavaraj Bommai said the is contemplating bringing a law in the assembly to prevent religious conversions.

Karnataka chief minister was responding to the allegation of conversion in Yadgir after reports of forced conversions from the region.

Earlier in April this year, Gujarat Vidhan Sabha had passed the ‘Gujarat Freedom of Religion Act, 2021’ with a majority to bring more stringent punishment against forced religious conversions through marriage.

Gujarat had become the third state after Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh to make a law against forced religious conversions.

Of the 84.7 lakh people scheduled to receive thesecond doseof the Covid-19 vaccine inKarnatakaby July 23 (morning), only 67% or 56.7 lakh have been fully inoculated, reports Sunitha Rao R. The government is now making efforts to track down the remaining 33% or 27.9 lakh and administer the dose on priority.
