The landscape of North Eastern Hills and Brahmaputra Plains Landscape (NEHBPL) has recorded 194 distinctive tigers captured in camera traps in 2022, according to the tiger census data released by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The methodology has changed in tiger count compared to 2018 when indirect evidence, without camera trap, was also considered. The estimated figure in NEHBPL was 219 in 2018. The estimated big cat Population in NEHBPL increased considerably from 100, detected in 2006. The maximum-minimum range of tigers in NEHBPL was 194 and 244 respectively in 2018.

According to “Status of Tigers in India-2018” report NEHBPL counted 219 tigers, which was an increase of 18 tigers from the 2014 figure of 201 tigers. NEHBPL spans the landscapes ofAssam, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Nagaland and the contiguous forests of north West Bengal.
Nevertheless, considering the Growth of tiger population over the years, NEHBPL is one of the three zones alongwith Shivalik & Gangetic floodplain and Central India where tiger population has shown substantial rise, read the report. “There may be an estimated decline compared to the last survey, but since 2010, it has been a substantial rise from 2006 – it’s almost doubled,” said Bibhab Kumar Talukdar, acclaimed wildlife expert, who was present at the event.

Overall, Shivalik Hills & Gangetic Plains Landscape has 804 camera trapped tigers, while landscape-wise Central Indian Highlands & Eastern Ghats Landscape has the highest 1,161 individual tigers photo captured.

Assam’s per capita debt burden estimated at Rs 26,000

Assam’sper capita debt burdenat the close of the last financial year 2021-22 is estimated at Rs 26,771 while the per capita income has been pegged at Rs 1,02,965 (by quick estimate), state finance minister Ajanta Neog informed the assembly.

Quoting reports from the statedirectorate of economics and statistics, Neog stated that the state’s per capita income according to quick estimates was Rs 1,02,965 andGDPRs 4,12,162 crore registering a Growth rate of over 16% in 2021-22.
The minister said in last three financial years, the availed a total loan of Rs 17,148 crore during the last financial year from several sources for various purposes.

During 2021-22, the state government has taken Rs 12,753 crore from market borrowings for development work, another loan of Rs 1,385.94 crore has been taken for developing rural Infrastructure from financial institutions, central loans of Rs 157.34 crore for implementing development schemes and Rs 600 crore for implementing capital schemes and Rs 2252.10 crore from state provident fund for development and welfare projects.

Gulab Chand Kataria sworn in as 31st Governor of Assam

Gulab Chand Kataria takes oath as the Governor of Assam. 78-year-old Kataria was sworn in as the 31st governor of Assam at Srimanta Kalakshetra in Guwahati. Kataria, a resident of Udaipur in Rajasthan, would succeed professor Jagdish Mukhi, who demitted office on February 19 after completing his term. Earlier, Kataria had served as the Home Minister of Rajasthan and a leader of opposition in the State Assembly there.

All FTs in the country are in Assam and as per the , the total number of FTs currently operating in Assam is 100. The total cases pending in these FTs as on 31.12.2021 is 1,23,829. The total number of people declared as foreigners as on 31.12.2021 is 1,43,466. The total number of people declared as Indian as on 31.12.2021 is 1,21,598.

Tea production in Assam dips by 8% in 2021: NE body

Assams total tea production witnessed a plunge of nearly 8% last year as compared to 2019 for the period of January to November. The states tea production in 2020 was hit by the Covid-19 lockdown, and hence not taken into account by the tea . For the period of January to November, the total tea production in 2021 was 641.23 million kg as against 593.58 million kg in 2020 and 693.62 million kg in 2019.

Significantly, Assams tea production for the entire year of 2019 was 716.49 million kg, which constituted 51.54% of the countrys total production of 1,390.08 million kg. In 2020, due to the Covid lockdown, Assams total tea production declined to 618.20 million kg, which was about 100 million kg less compared to 2019. The countrys total tea production was 1,257.53 million kg that year.

More than 1,000 govt schools in Assam don’t have electricity: Govt

In a digital era, over 1,100 government schools, mostly elementary, are functioning withoutelectricity, the informed the state assembly.

There are over 50,000 government-run schools in the state, from elementary to senior secondary level.

The minister also stated that 2,979 elementary schools have single-teachers, while 15,161 schools of the same category are being managed by two teachers each. Altogether 8,207 elementary schools have three teachers each. Pegu informed the house that there were no secondary-level schools with such a low count of teachers. Contrary to the scenario of single-teacher schools, the state government said there have been 2,916 elementary schools that have more than seven teachers each. The number of high schools and higher secondary schools with more than seven teachers each were 4,129.

Quoting the Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE) 2021-22 findings, Pegu informed that 3,117 schools do not have toilet facilities for boys, whereas 1,693 lack toilets for girls. Most of these schools also belong to the elementary standards.
On the other hand, 1,124 schools inAssamdo not have proper drinking water, of which 1,066 are elementary and 58 are secondary-level schools.

Meghalaya CM to meet Himanta Biswa Sarma on border dispute with Assam

MeghalayaCM Conrad KSangmasaid that he would meetAssamchief ministerHimanta Biswa Sarmaon Saturday evening to fix a date for the official border talks between the two neighbouring states.

The issue of the boundary dispute with Assam was discussed during the meeting of theMeghalaya Democratic Alliance(MDA), held ahead of Union Home MinisterAmit Shah’s visit to the state on July 24.

Sangma, who is the chairman of the MDA, said that he has decided to start the process of consultation with the stakeholders on the issue.

There is a need to involve different social organisations, headmen and nokmas as the government will have to go across the board to ensure the inclusion of people who matter in the process.

TheAssamgovernment will organise a mega sporting competition across all villages of the state to tap sporting talents, chief ministerHimanta Biswa Sarmasaid.

Assam worst among northeastern states in providing tap water to rural households

Assamis at the bottom of the performance table among northeastern states when it comes to providingtap watertorural householdsunder the Union governments Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM). The state is blessed with enormous Resources“>Water Resources. However, if the state has to meet the government deadline of 100% coverage by 2024, it has to accelerate the pace of installation.

The Union Jal Shakti minister, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, informed theLok Sabhaon Thursday that out of 65.67 lakh rural households in Assam, only 41% are reported to have tap water in their homes after three years of JJM. This includes 1.11 lakh (1.69%) households, which already had tap water before the launch of JJM in 2019.

It took three years to connect 26.05 lakh households with tap water in Assam under JJM with an estimated 8.68 lakh target achieved annually. However, the government will have to accelerate the pace by achieving over 19 lakh targets annually for the next two years to accomplish the goal of giving tap water connection to the remaining 38.51 lakh households.

The Union Government, in PARTNERSHIP with the states, is implementing the programme to provide tap water to every rural household across districts. The goal is to provide 55 litre treated potable water per member in a household.

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma launches Assam Millets Mission

Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched the Assam Mission to meet the country’s export demand, besides raising the Nutrition quotient and doubling the income of farmers.

The Centre has prepared a comprehensive strategy to promote Indianmilletexports across the globe from December.

Sarma said the mission has been launched in synergy with the Prime Minister’s aim of obtaining ‘atmanirbharta’ (self-sufficiency). He hoped that under the millet mission, the farmers would diversify their Cropping practices and extend farming to grow millets. The state Agriculture-notes-for-state-psc-exams”>Agriculture department has undertaken initiatives in launching the millet mission on 25,000 hectares of crop land initially.
According to the government plan, it will be extended to 50,000 hectares in later phases, to compete with high yielding states like Rajasthan.
