Six months
One year
Two years
Untill it is repealed by the Parliament

The correct answer is: A. Six months.

Article 356 of the Constitution of India deals with the President’s Rule. It empowers the President to suspend the Constitution of a State and assume all its powers if he is satisfied that a situation has arisen in which the government of the State cannot be carried on in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution.

When the President issues a proclamation under Article 356, he has to simultaneously report the matter to the Parliament. The Parliament then has to either approve or disapprove the proclamation within two months. If the Parliament approves the proclamation, it can remain in force for a maximum period of six months. However, the Parliament can extend the period of the proclamation for a further period

of six months at a time, up to a maximum period of three years.

The President’s Rule is a controversial provision in the Constitution. It has been used by the Central government to dismiss elected governments in States on several occasions. The Supreme Court has held that the President’s Rule can only be used as a last resort, when there is a complete breakdown of the constitutional machinery in a State.

The options are:

A. Six months. This is the maximum period upto which a proclamation issued by the President under Article-356 of the Constitution and approved/extended by the Parliament may, normally, remain in force.
B. One year. This is the minimum period upto which a proclamation issued by the President under Article-356 of the Constitution may remain in force.
C. Two years. This is the maximum period upto which a proclamation issued by the President under Article-356 of the Constitution may remain in force, if it is not approved by the Parliament.
