The Jallianwala Bagh is a public garden in Amritsar, India, and the site of a massacre that took place on the orders of Acting Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer on 13 April 1919, during the British Raj. Indian nationalists, many of them unarmed, were protesting against the arrest of two local leaders when Dyer ordered his troops to fire on them without warning. The British government later exonerated Dyer of any wrongdoing, but the massacre remains a controversial event in Indian history.
