‘Ernakulam reported highest number of Covid cases in India in 2021’

In 2021 during the peak of the second Covid wave in India,Ernakulamdistrict reported the highest numbers of Covid cases in India, according to a research paper published by a team of doctors who were part of the Covid-19 surveillance unit of Ernakulam district, and hence, had access to the data collected. Even when the number of Covid cases reported in the other states started coming down, Ernakulam district continued to record a large number of cases, as per the paper that aimed to analyse the pandemic situation in the district.

Ernakulam district had the highest number of Covid cases in January 2021 and May 2021.

However, the silver lining, as per the paper is that this is mainly because of the high number of tests (five to six times the national Average) and targeted testing strategy, resulting in low case fatality rate (0.35%) and low bed occupancy rate. This work is relevant even now as Ernakulam records the maximum number ofCovid cases in Kerala, which contributes to more than 30% to 35% of Covid cases and 50% Covid deaths in the country. However, Covid deaths in the district remain low with case fatality rate (CFR) being 0.91%, while the state CFR is 1.05%. The recovery rate here is more than 96%.

Over 80% of cattle in Andhra Pradesh vaccinated

Andhra Pradeshhas so far vaccinated about 38 lakh cattle out of the total 46 lakh animals in the state against the lumpy skin disease (LSD). The state, which recorded only two cases by the end of August, has detected nearly 10,000LSDcases in the last 45 days, including a death.

LSD in cattle and buffaloes is characterised by mild fever for two to three days, followed by development of stiff, round cutaneous nodules (2 to 5 cm in diameter) all over the body.

Although the infected animals often recover within two to three weeks, there will be a reduction in milk yield in lactating cattle for several weeks. Despite restriction orders on transportation of cattle and fairs due to the LSD, the unauthorised shandies in remote rural areas have become a challenge for the officials in the containment of the disease.

The Union Government, in an advisory, asked the states to enforce requisite biosecurity measures in letter and spirit to control the spread of the disease. One of the critical measures suggested in the advisory is to identify the infected villages to carry out precautionary plans in the specific area and ringvaccinationin a five-kilometre radius around the affected villages.

Goa to earn additional Rs 50 crore per year from beer excise hike

The recent hike in excise duty on beer will net the cash-strapped Goa government an additional Rs 50 crore on an annual basis. Goa’s liquor , which sells close to six million cases of beer every year, has accepted the Rs 10-12 increase in prices, but cautioned the government against tinkering with prices of hard liquor on the eve of the tourist season. The state earns around Rs 500cr a year on excise collections.

The Goa government hiked the excise duty on beer by Rs 10-12 per bulk litre, while leaving the excise duty on Indian made foreign liquor (IMFL) and foreign liquor unchanged. Attempts to increase excise duty on IMFL and foreign liquor will have a ripple effect on Goa’s tourism industry and the coming wedding season, said a major alcohol retailer and wholesale dealer.

Goa, which has always been known for cheap alcohol rates and liberal drinking policies, is no longer the country’s cheapest liquor destination. Hard liquor rates in Delhi,Haryana, and Chandigarh are more affordable, and many north Indian travellers have stopped purchasing hard liquor while flying back Home after a wedding, holiday, or business trip.
