Centre to clarify violation of constitutional scheme in Nagaland pollsThe Supreme Court observed that women empowerment comes by education and also through political participation, while asking the Centre to clarify whether the constitutional scheme of one-third reservation for women in municipality and town council elections can be violated by Nagaland. A bench of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Aravind Kumar noted that a period of male domination had existed in every society, and the judiciary needs to give a push if the political dispensation fails to act. Assam govt receives GI tag certificate for Assamese Gamosa

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma received the Geographical Indication Registration Certificate for Asomiya Gamosa.

The GI Registration is for eight Gamosa, namely Uka or Xadharan Gamosa, Phulam Gamosa, Bihuwan, Tiani or Pani Gamosa, Anakata Gamosa, Telos Gamosa, Dora Boron or Jor Gamosa, and Gossain Gamosa.

After the GI Registration, others are not allowed to make or market the product. The registration is a legal acknowledgment of the goods

for a certain geographic area or territory. Millions of weavers in the state will be protected due to the GI Tag.

State eyes Rs 10K cr from taxes on liquor this FY

Encouraged with a high Growth in collection of Excise revenue in the past two years, the is eyeing for Rs 10,000 crore Excise and VAT collection from liquor during the Financial Year (FY) 2023-24.

5,528.40 crore Excise and Rs 2,100 crore VAT totalling to Rs 7,628.40 crore in 2021-22, thereby registering a growth of 41.26 per cent.

Similarly, the State has collected Rs 6,182.36 crore Excise and Rs 2585 crore VAT from liquor making a record amount of Rs 8,767.36 crore during the FY 2022-23 marking a growth of 14.93 percent against the collection of FY 2021-22.

While Rs 4,053.51 crore Excise revenue was collected during the FY 2020-21, it has increased to Rs 5,528.40 crore in 2021-22, thereby registering a growth of 36.39 percent. The excise revenue collection again increased by 11.83 percent to Rs 6,182 crore in 2022-23.

Moreover, the State collected Rs 1,346.71 crore VAT on excise items during 2020-21, which witnessed a growth of 55.93 per cent in 2021-22 and 23.08 percent growth in 2022-23. The State had collected Rs 2,100 crore and Rs 2,585 crore VAT from liquor during 2021-22 and 2022-23, respectively.

To achieve the ambitious Excise revenue target set for 2023-24, the State Government has come up with a comprehensive Excise Policy for the current fiscal.

Mission launched to capture ‘Karuppan’ in Tamil Nadu

Kerala tops list of women going on Haj sans ‘mehram’

Thelargest contingent so far of over 4,000 Women is preparing to travel for Haj without mehram(male companion) with the first flight expected to leave on May 21. Over 2,800 of these women are from Kerala. The women in the state have taken the lead each year since 2018 when policy changes for the first time enabled Muslim women above 45 years of age to travel in groups of four or more without mehram forHaj.

2,000 projects on Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board land yet to get rolling

Nearly 2,000 projects in industrial areas developed by theKarnataka Industrial Areas Development Board(KIADB) have failed to take off, even past the deadline to start work, while more than 13,000 are currently under way.

Data from the state industries department show that across the 199 industrial areas developed by KIADB, more than 21,569 units have been allotted land in excess of 35,949.3 acres. Of these, 3,579 units are spread across 5,556.9 acres in 16 estates across Bengaluru Urban district, while there are other units in Bengaluru Rural, Tumakuru and Mysuru districts.

Data show that while 13,464 units are currently being worked on, there are 1,995 units for which the deadline for implementation has already expired.
District-wise data for units that have failed to take off reveal that maximum number of these units

(322) are in estates in Tumakuru, followed by Bengaluru Rural (288), Kalaburagi (207), Dharwad (184) and Gadag (138), implying that government’s efforts to take industries to tier two and three towns needs a more focused approach.

Centre turns down DPR for Telangana irrigation scheme

The Centre has turned down the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Palamuru-Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Scheme (PRLIS) proposed by theTelanganagovernment.

Taking the objections raised by AP, the project appraisal directorate in Central Water Commission (Cwc) made it clear that the DPR could not be

taken up for examination until the KWDT-II gives its verdict on the issue. The project was proposed to take up with 45 tmc ft.

In a Communication sent to the chief engineer of irrigation department, CWC project directorate senior official Nityananda Mukhejee said that Andhra Pradesh government had informed that the issue ofGodavariwater diversion to the Krishna is one of the issues before the ongoing proceedings of KWDT-II.

New energy policy set to save 25% demand

Andhra Pradeshhas come up with a draft Energy Efficiency policy. The measures proposed under this draft policy are expected to save around 16,875 million units, which is equivalent to 25.6% of the total electricity demand of the state.

40% demand-supply gap in cashew in Goa: Deviya Rane

Poriem MLA and chairperson of the Goa Forest Development Corporation (GFDC), Deviya Rane on Saturday pointed to a 40% demand-supply gap of cashews in the state due to which “duplicate” cashewnuts were being marketed as a local product.

minister Pramod Sawant, meanwhile, said that the newly increased support price of Rs 150 per kg for cashew produce in Goa will now also be made available to farmers who sold their produce in the last financial year during the January-March 2023 quarter.

Maharashtra intensifies focus on private health sector to eliminate TB

The is set to rope in 45 NGOs to work closely with private doctors as part of its strategy to eliminate tuberculosis by 2025.
These NGOs, also called patient-provider support agency (PPSA), will work with private doctors to find TB patients and put them on treatment without compromising their confidentiality. The new NGOs are besides the existing 35 such entities.

Those seeking care from state and Municipal Corporation-run hospitals are followed by dedicated Health staff

till they finish the six-month-long treatment and are fully cured. But not everyone seeking care from private doctors, clinics and hospitals gets such care.

As per the national TB prevalence survey, for every one lakh Population in India, there are 199 TB patients. Going by the prevalence rate, Maharashtra, with its 12.87 crore population, is expected to have 2.5 lakh TB patients. Of these, almost 1 lakh seek care from private doctors, and the rest go to state and municipal corporation-run health units.

Under PPSA, a third-party agency is on-boarded to engage private-sector doctors who treat patients with TB and provide end-to-end Services, including diagnosis, notification, patient adherence and support, and treatment linkages, he added.

Under the project, a TB patient seeking medical care at a private clinic or hospital is also provided with free diagnostics and medications.
