Madurai Kamaraj University gets ancient DNA lab to study archaeological digs

Finance ministerPalanivel Thiaga Rajanon Thursday inaugurated an ancient DNA laboratory and Bio-Safety Level (BSL) 3 research and diagnostic facility atMadurai Kamaraj University. The DNA laboratory will be useful in analysis of samples retrieved from archaeological digs, particularly in south Nadu.

MKU is collaborating with the state department of archaeology to analyze skeletal samples from Konthagai, Sivagalai, Kodumanal, Mayiladumparai and Adhichanallur. The university also works with Prof David Reich from Department of Genetics, Harvard Medical School.

The data of ancient DNA and protein would be compared with global data to understand Migration and linkages with the global Population. DNA from ancient animals and Plants of would be investigated to understand the historical agricultural / domestication / trade practices.
