Uttarakhand: Primary classes in govt schools to operate even on Saturdays

TheUttarakhandEducation department has decided to allow government schools to call primary students along with secondary students on Saturdays to make up for the time lost in the current academic year. The decision has been taken in view of the “stable Covid-19 situation” in the hill state.

The education department, meanwhile, has released its annual holiday calendar for the next academic year. The state-run schools will operate for 244 days in winter prone areas while those located in summer prone areas like the plains, will operate for 243 days.
Though, the calendar for 2022 shows that schools will remain closed on Saturday. The principals will have the right to declare upto three holidays in the year for their respective schools. But, they will need to provide prior information to the concerned block education officer.

These three leaves will be counted as “discretionary leaves”. The same right for discretionary leaves have been given to all district magistrates.

The demand to give Uttarakhand a separate statehood had arisen even before the independence of India. In British rule too, the demand for a separate state was raised after a session at several places. But even after independence, it took many years for Uttarakhand to get the status of a separate state.

Finally, Uttarakhand was formed on the 9th November 2000 as the 27th State of India, when it was carved out of northern Uttar Pradesh. It was earlier known as Uttaranchal, however, in 2007, it was renamed Uttarakhand. This year, it will be 22nd Uttarakhand Foundation Day.

Politics in Uttarakhand is dominated by the Indian National Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Since the formation of the state these two parties have ruled the state in turns. The Uttarakhand state is the second fastest growing state in India. The real GSDP grew at 13.7% (CAGR) during the FY2005FY2012 period. Per capita income in Uttarakhand is 1,03,000 (FY 2013) which is higher than the national Average of 74,920 (FY2013).

Rishikesh in Uttarakhand is the Yoga Capital of the world. There are several famous Yoga and meditation institutes here, which usually remains crowded with followers and yoga practitioners from across the globe.
Tehri Dam, at 260.5 m above sea level, on River Bhagirathi in the Tehri Garhwal region of Uttarakhand is the highest dam in India. This is also among the 10 highest Dams in the world.

Dehradun gets countrys first Gorkhali community radio station

Emphasising that community radios are important for nation-building, preservation of language, culture and heritage, Governor Lt Gen Gurmit Singh (retd) inaugurated the countrys first Gorkhali community radio station at Gorkhali Sudhar Sabha in Garhi Cantt area of Dehradun.

Those behind the initiative say the idea is to preserve and promote the culture of the Gorkha community.

India has around 1.5 crore Gorkhas, of which nearly 15 lakh are based in Uttarakhand.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami appreciated the Industry department for organising the Vanijya Utsav as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.

Inaugurating the event on Tuesday Dhami said the export from Uttarakhand has nearly doubled in the past five years. Uttarakhands exports were valued at Rs 10,836 crore in 2017-18 which have increased in value to Rs 15,914 crore in 2020-21.

The automobile and pharmaceutical units are emerging as the biggest exporters in the state. Apart from these, floriculture, Agriculture-notes-for-state-psc-exams”>Agriculture and Food Processing, organic produce, aromatic-medicinal Plants, Biotechnology and handicrafts are also being exported from the state, said Dhami.

Minister Ganesh Joshi said Uttarakhand is emerging as an industrial destination for industrialists around the world. He also spoke about the various measures and plans of the State Government aimed at boosting industrial development in Uttarakhand.

Uttarakhand boxer Nivedita bags gold at Youth National Boxing Championship

Pithoragarh-based boxer Nivedita Karki claimed the gold medal at the Fourth Youth National Boxing Championship in Sonipat on Friday after stunning youth world champion Gitika in the finals by 3-2.

The 17-year-old boxer clinched the top spot in the womens 48kg category. Her win has shocked several observers as her opponent Gitika had won a gold medal in the 48 kg category at the Youth World Boxing Championship, held in Poland in April 2021.

Karki first shot to fame after she won a gold medal for the country at the Golden Girl Box Cup held in Sweden in February 2020.

Jageshwar dham to be developed as centre for holistic well-being

Various government departments, academic institutions, medical colleges, Police, paramilitary staff, and District Administration inUttarakhandcame together to celebrateInternational Dayon Wednesday. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami participated in ayoga session at Jageshwar DhaminAlmora, where he announced plans to develop the location as “a centre for holistic well-being”.

Yoga encompasses mental, physical, spiritual, religious, and cultural awareness.

He further mentioned the initiation of the Manas Mandir Mala Mission, a project aimed at developing major temples in the Kumaon region, starting with Jageshwar dham. Meanwhile, Swami Rama Himalayan University celebrated InternationalYoga Daywith the theme ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ meaning ‘the world is one family.

The additional secretary of the ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Ravi Agrawal visited ENVIS (Environmental Information System) resource partner on forestry and forestry related livelihoods at Forest Research Institute to review and monitor ongoing programmes.

Agrawal was apprised of various activities and progrmmes executed by the ENVIS-FRI. He saw various ENVIS publications and appreciated the outreach awareness programmes of the centre on various occasions involving school, college and university students.

He also appreciated the implementation of Green Skill development Programme of MoEF&CC wherein 32 GSDP training programmes were organised during financial years 2018-19 and 2019-20 by ICFRE Institutes benefiting 596 participants. He informed that the government has a target of imparting training to seven lakh participants for EMPLOYMENT generation by the end of this financial year. He stressed over the need to increase participation of secondary level students significantly to achieve the objective of this government scheme.

Uttarakhand to build 17,000 polyhouses in a year

In a major push to the sector, theUttarakhand cabineton Tuesday approved 17,648polyhousesin the Himalayan state.

Eying the Delhi market, these polyhouses would be used to grow vegetables, flowers and fruits. While a farmer would contribute 20% of the fund required, the remaining 80% would be provided by the State Government.

In a major decision to prevent traffic snarls and unplanned constructions at key locations in the hills, the government has decided that anyone constructing a structure within a distance of 50 metre of state highways, national highways and key tourist locations in hill areas will have to take permission from the development authorities. Similarly, in the plains, the distance would be 100 metre from such locations.

Water Sports and Adventure Institute (WSAI) has been installed by way of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) at Tehri Dam in Uttarakhand.

The institute was once inaugurated on Friday through Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat and Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju. ITBPs Mountaineering and Skiing Institute at Auli will independently run this institution, which will impart coaching in aero, water and land-related sports and journey activities.

Training in kayaking, rowing, canoeing, water skiing, para-gliding, para-sailing, scuba diving, paddle boating, pace boating, kite surfing, jet skiing, etc, will additionally be provided at this institute. Apart from this, water rescue and life-saving publications will be carried out here. It has been centered to train at least 200 early life in water sports activities at this group each year.

Cabinet approves New Excise policy of Ukhand

The State cabinet in its meeting held gave its approval to the new excise policy-2023-24. In an attempt to curtail the sale of illicit liquor and smuggling from other States the policy envisages bringing parity in prices of the liquor bottles of regular brands. There would not be a difference exceeding Rs 20 per bottle between the prices of liquor of regular brand in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The excise department has also decided to carry forward the licences of existing liquor shops for the year 2023-24 as well. The existing license holders would have to submit an additional surcharge of 15 per cent on last year’s rates to renew their licenses. The licences of the shops which are not renewed would be allotted on the basis of a lottery. The has set up a target of Rs 4,000 crore for the excise department. In another decision the government has decided to levy a cess of Rs three on sale of every bottle of liquor in the state. A sum of Rs one each has been levied for Sports, Women welfare and conservation of bovine species.

In another decision the cabinet decided to extend existing fitness charges for the vehicles engaged in mining for one more year. The cabinet also gave its nod to the proposal that has a provision of self attestation to the applicant for construction of single story houses.
