At a time when fuel prices are at an all-time high across the country, chief minister M K Stalin on Tuesday inaugurated through video conferencing 25CNG(compressed natural gas) stations in Chennai and Tiruvallur and one main station of Gujarat-basedTorrent Gas. The company will invest Rs 5000 crore in the state over the next five years.

Torrent Gas has announced a price of Rs 51.35 per kg for CNG, in Chennai and Tiruvallur, which is the second lowest CNG price in the country after the NCR region, said Jinal Mehta, director, Torrent Gas. Though Chennai is a late entrant as far as usage of CNG as fuel for vehicles is concerned, this is the right time to enter into the market, said Jinal Mehta.

Torrent Gas, in its efforts to promote and build an ecosystem conducive for widespread adoption of CNG has tied up with car and vehicle manufacturers. Existing petrol car users can also get their cars converted to CNG by fitting their vehicles with CNG kits from government approved retrofitters.

Liquor sale in Tamil Nadu: Tasmac to go digital

Those buyingliquorfrom state-run liquor shops inTamil Nadumay soon get a bill as Nadu State Marketing Corporation (Tasmac) is on its way to complete computerisation.

Tasmac has awarded a Rs 294 crore order to public sector undertaking Railtel for end-to-end computerisation of its operations.

In a filing to the Stock Exchanges, RailTel said it has received the work order from Tasmac for “implementation of an integrated solution enabling end-to-endcomputerizationand connectivity of core and support functions of Tasmac.” The contract for digitization is to be executed within five years

Tamil Nadu CM Stalin urges Kerala chief minister to increase water supply to Coimbatore from Siruvani dam

Naduchief ministerM K Stalin wrote toKeralachief ministerPinarayi Vijayanrequesting him to increase the water supply from theSiruvani damto augment drinking water to Coimbatore city.

Stalin stated that the Kerala Irrigation department had been supplying less quantity of water in recent years than the stipulated quantity, resulting in water shortage in Coimbatore city. He stated that water quantity had come down due to lowering of water storage level in the Siruvani dam.

He stated that the department was maintaining storage level at 877.0 metre instead of full reservoir level (FRL) of 878.50 metre. Due to the lowering of the level by 1.5 metre, only 528 mcft could be stored against the capacity of 650 mcft, resulting in the storage loss of 122 mcft (19% of the total storage).

As much as 101.4 MLD of water has to be released to Coimbatore, not exceeding 1.30 TMC annually, as per the agreement with the Tamil Nadu government dated August 19, 1973. But over the past six years, water ranging only between 0.484 TMC and 1.128 TMC had been received.

Vedanta to put Rs 60,000 crore into semiconductors

Days after the government announced a mega incentive package to bring in semiconductor investments into the country,Anil AgarwalsVedanta grouphas said that it will invest up to Rs 60,000 crore to set up a sophisticated chip and glass manufacturing ecosystem in India over the next three years.

It is also finalising technology and partnerships and joint ventures with top fabrication makers across the world. This is Agarwals second attempt at bringing in semiconductor investments into India. The fresh charge will be led through AvanStrate, a Japanese glass substrate manufacturer that Vedanta had acquired in December 2017 from the Carlyle Group.

India does not have a chip manufacturing ecosystem, despite being a significant consumption market for semiconductor-led industries, and depends solely on costly imports. The funding from our groups side will be through equity and debt, apart from potential partnerships, Hebbar said, adding around 80% of production will be used for domestic market, while rest will be for exports

Govt enhancing livelihood of tribal communities: Minister

Minister for adi dravidar and tribal welfareN Kayalvizhi Selvarajinaugurated a two-day national seminar on of Tribal Communities: Issues and Challenges at the Research Centre for Tribal Culture in Ooty.

Of the 36 tribal communities inTamil Nadu, Toda, Kota, Kurumba, Irula, Paniya and Kattunayakan are on verge of degeneration, the minister said. The government is taking all possible efforts to enhance the livelihood of tribal communities.
Tribal communities comprise only 1.1% of the total Population of the state. Their Literacy rate stands at 54.5%, while the states literacy rate is 81%. Thanks to the governments special focus on 320 government tribal residential schools and eight Ekalaiva model schools last year, 4,000 more tribal students joined government tribal schools this academic year, compared to last year, she said.
The government allocated 45.79 crore to develop infrastructures in government tribal schools and sanctioned 50.5 crore towards scholarships that benefitted 35,953 tribal students in the last academic year,Kayalvizhisaid.

Earlier, Kayalvizhi inaugurated the information centre and photo exhibition organised at a cost of 21 lakh at the Tribal Research Centre in Muthorai Palada near Ooty.

US firm acquires coco coir products manufacturing unit in Tamil Nadu

Leading manufacturer of specialty agriscience materials, US based Profile Products LLC, has acquired Nivetha Exporters, an international producer of high qualitycococoir products in Nadu. Nivetha Exporters with two factories at Pollachi in Coimbatore district recorded a turnover of 100 crore during the last financial year (2021-22).

However, the size of the deal was not disclosed.RiverBridge Investment Advisors Pvt Ltdacted as the exclusive financial advisor for Nivetha.

Coco peat produced from coconut husk is used for soilless cultivation. The acquisition of Nivetha, which is renamed as CoirSci, augments Profile Products raw material selection that now includes peat, coir and HydraFiber, engineered fiber solution and controlled release fertilizer products.

Tamil Nadu government, which unveiled its new export promotion strategy recently, has identified six champion sectors to focus for the statesexports thrust.The champion sectors identified for strategy include automobile and auto components, textiles, food processing, leather and footwear, electronic and communication as well as machinery.

Unveiling the states Export Promotion strategy on Wednesday this week, chief minister M K Stalin had set out a target for the state to achieve $100 billion in exports by 2030. This requires the states exports to jump four-fold in just over eight years from the present $26 billion and hence the need to identify champion sectors for special focus as part of the strategy.

Nadu boasts of a diversified export basket in various sectors including automobile and components, machinery and instruments, electronic hardware, Software, readymade garments and accessories, yarns, fabrics and leather products. Manufactured goods account for a significant share of the states economic Growth and exports and hence it has traditionally focused on exportoriented manufacturing to foster high-value production.

According to the export policy, the value of merchandise from Tamil Nadu stood at Rs 11.55 lakh crore ($168.5 billion) between 2015-16 and 2020-21. In FY2020-21, Tamil Nadu accounted for 9% of the national exports.

Tamil Nadu govt plans talks with Kerala on 3 water-sharing projects

Naduwould soon hold talks withKeralaatThiruvananthapuramto resolve various inter-state water disputes including strengthening of Mullaperiyar dam and implementation of Pamba-Achankoil-Vaippar link, which would help divert 22tmcft of water to Sankarankoil, Kovilpatti, Sivagiri, Srivilliputhur, Rajapalayam, Sathur and Tenkasi taluks in Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Nadu had sanctioned Rs9.8 crore for the work. The state has also sanctioned installation of seismic instruments at the dam at Rs99.9 lakh. TheTamil Nadu governmentalso requires permission from Kerala to cut 23 trees to complete the strengthening work of Baby dam and repair the ghat road. Due to the obstructionist Attitude of Kerala government, it was getting delayed, the minister said.
On Pamba-Achankoil-Vaippar link, Duraimurugan said the project could help generate 500MW power for Kerala. Despite Tamil Nadu giving its concurrence for preparing a detailed project report, Kerala was not in favour of the project, he said.

The Tamil Nadu government also wants Kerala to give nod to the modified proposal of Pandiyar-Punnampuzha project, proposed by the DMK government in 2006. The project was expected to generate 60MWhydropowerand divert 7tmcft (thousand million cubic feet) water through a 27km long tunnel to Moyar in Bhavani sub-basin to meet the drinking and Irrigation needs of some drought-prone areas. After conducting preliminary study, a feasibility report had been prepared to facilitate discussions with Kerala

The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by chief minister M K Stalin in which minister forIndustries, Official Language, Tamil culture and archeologyThangam Thennarasuand chief secretaryV Irai Anbualso participated.

Earlier, chief minister Stalin had ordered the institution of an award to honour those who worked for the Growth and betterment of Tamil Nadu and Tamils. Sankaraiah, who entered public life at a young age, went on to become a student leader, participated in the nations freedom struggle, got elected to the legislative assembly and worked for the growth of Tamil Nadu and the cause of Tamils, would be the first recipient of the award, a statement from the Tamil Nadu government said.
