Waste mgmt system launched for Twin City

A comprehensive Waste Management system was launched on Monday for the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack on the occasion of World Environment Day.

This would be done in collaboration between AshimaBioearth and Recykal.

With the objective of promoting effective waste management and contributing to a circular economy, AshimaBioearth at present is working with the Bhubaneswar (BMC) and the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) for dry waste.

This joint effort aims to revolutionise waste management practices by implementing innovative solutions and driving behavioural changes among the residents of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.

By leveraging their expertise in waste management and sustainability, AshimaBioearth and Recykal have successfully established a robust framework for handling dry waste.

This comprehensive system encompasses collection, segregation, processing, and recycling of various types of dry waste materials. Through this initiative, both companies are committed to minimising waste generation, optimising resource utilisation, and reducing the environmental impact associated with waste disposal.

The Odisha State Forestry Department witnessed an adult Gharial, surrounded by 28 incubators in the Satkosia gorge of the Mahanadi River, which is considered the southernmost point of the gharial habitat in India.

The forest department has been working for 15 years to increase the number of piranhas in its natural habitat in Orissa.

Therefore, the sight of mating piranhas and their larvae becomes very important. Gharial is also known as piranha or fish-eating crocodile and is a crocodile of the Gavialidae family. It is the longest of all living crocodiles.

Nonetheless, India and Nepal have started conservation plans, focusing on the reintroduction of captive food ingredients. But since 2007, they have been listed as “critically endangered” in the Red List.

Rehab centres for disabled kids to be renamed

The has decided to rename the rehabilitation centres for children withdisabilitiesas Manodaya. The department of social security and Empowerment of persons with disabilities issued a notification in this regard recently.

The State Institute for Empowerment of Persons(SIEP) with Disabilities is setting up centres to provide rehabilitation to children with disabilities, the notification said, adding, In order to give acommonnomenclature and identity to these centres, the government will name all the existing as well as the upcoming service centres of SIEP as Manodaya.

Presently, there are three such centres in Bhubaneswar, Berhampur and Jajpur which provide different therapeutic and counselling Services to children with disabilities, department directorBratati Harichandansaid.

A three-person team composed of the Orissa State High Court conducted a field visit to the Gahirmatha Marine Reserve to assess the measures taken to protect the endangered olive ridley sea turtles. Highlights:

According to a report in the Environmental Journal, since January, 800 olive ridley turtles have died due to the negligence of the States Forest and department.

Every year, thousands of olive ridley turtles on the coast of the Orissa Sea build large-scale nests.

Gahirmatha beach off the coast of the Bay of Bengal in Odisha is recognized as the worlds largest nesting site for these turtles.

Chilika Water Bird Status Survey

A bird census was recently done in Chilika Lake by the Odisha Wildlife Organization.

Highlights:

Chilika Development Authority and Bombay Natural HISTORY Society have joined the organization.

Chilika is the world’s largest brackish lake. Birds migrate to the lake for the winter.

A total of 106 people were involved in the survey. Bird experts from both non-governmental and government groups were present.

To conduct the census, the lake was split into 21 sections. Inside Chilika Lake is the Nalabana Bird Sanctuary.

In the Nalabana sanctuary, 3,58,889 birds were sighted. In comparison to the previous census, the number of birds in the reserve has reduced by 65,000.

The low count was caused by the high water level in the lake and its environs. Waterbirds love to congregate in muddy areas.

Odisha’s Covid mgmt could be reference for future

The way several States, including Odisha, battled the Covid-19 pandemic and emerged successful must be documented for generation of evidence so that the situation could be tackled effectively if the country faced a similar calamity in future, Senior Consultant (Health) of the ,Dr K Madan Gopalsaid.

The course would include nine semesters while the students would be trained in comprehensive clinics for better Learning and patient ease at each institute, he said, adding he was hopeful that the new curriculum would be launched next year.

There were 316 dental colleges under DCI while around 26,000 students were taking admission in those colleges, Dr Mazumdar said while praising IDS for being ranked 10th in the country though it was started in 2006. Besides, it was the only dental science institute in the country which was among the ten institutes affiliated to Cochrane India Network.

Odisha records OGST collection of Rs 827.43 crore in May

Despite the Covid-19 pandemic situation, the state has witnessed record collection ofOdisha Goods and Services Tax(OGST).

It has collected Rs 827.43 crore during the month of May this year against the collection of Rs 589.3 crore in May 2019 and Rs 440.67 crore in May last year.

Last months collection has recorded a Growth of 40.4% against the collection of May 2019.
This growth is witnessed despite the extension of return filing date by theGST Counciland poor filing of returns/payment of tax by dealers having turnover of less than Rs 5 crore, said the official sources.

The government has collected Rs 690.32 crore in Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST), Rs 1094.7 crore in Integrated Goods and Services Tax (IGST) and Rs 584.3 crore in Cess.
The total GST collection during May this year is Rs 3196.75 crore as against Rs 2140.37 crore collected during May 2019 and Rs 1724.26 crore during May last year.
This shows a growth of 49.34% against collection of May 2019.

Ganjam bags natl award for water resources mgmt

The Government of India has selected Ganjam as the Best District in the field of Resources“>Water Resources conservation and management.

For the best efforts made by the District Administration led by Collector Dibya Jyoti Parida, the Ministry of Jal Shakti has selected Ganjam for the 4th National Water Awards, 2022.

Ganjam will be conferred with the awards very soon.

Under Best District category of the award, three districts are selected, of which Ganjam ranked at top.

Ministry of Jal Shakti Secretary Pankaj Kumar has informed the Ganjam Collector about the selection. The Collector will be felicitated at a national-level event.

The National Water Awards (NWAs) were introduced in 2018 to recognise and encourage exemplary work and efforts made by States, districts, individuals, organisations, etc., in accomplishing the governments vision Jal Samridh Bharat.

It aims to sensitise the public about the importance of water and motivate them to adopt the best water usage practices.

Promote jackfruit cultivation for nutrition security

In a step to enhance nutritional security, Chief Secretary Suresh Mahapatra has directed to promote and popularise jackfruit cultivation in the State.

Mahapatra directed the Department of to popularise cultivation of jackfruit with necessary supports like quality planting material, post harvest processing, value addition and Marketing. He added that jackfruit could be branded and popularized as a super-food among the people.

Mahapatra directed to identify the potential areas where jackfruit could be cultivated in large patches. The department was asked to explore all possibilities for promoting it in the areas where people had traditional skill for jackfruit cultivation.

He also directed to promote local Entrepreneurship for setting up post-harvest processing, and value addition enterprises on different verities of jackfruits. He also directed to increase the area under jackfruit cultivation in convergence withongoinghorticultural schemes and MGNRGES.

Secure Fishing App to empower fishers

The Odisha Government and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in India on Friday launched a mobile application, Secure Fishing App here.

The Department of and Animal Resources Development with the support of WFP has taken the initiative to empower fisher folks by providing real-time information, insights and analytics that directly contribute to their livelihood.

The Secure Fishing application is being implemented as a pilot in Paradip and will subsequently be extended to the marine fishers in the State.

The State Government has placed the fisheries and aquaculture sector as one of the Growth propellers for over 15.89 lakh fishermen, including farmers, SHG Women, youths and entrepreneurs.
