NER District SDG Index by NITI Aayog

& Development of North Eastern Region Ministry (M/DoNER) released the first version of the North Eastern Region District SDG Index Report and Dashboard for this reason attaining the milestone towards localizing the Sustainable Development Goals.

Highlights:

The index is the first of its form in the country as it focuses on the North Eastern Region, which is of quintessential magnitude to the countrys improvement trajectory.

It measures the performance of districts of the 8 States of Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura on the Sustainable Development Goals and their corresponding pursuits and ranks the districts based on the same.

The index is based on SDG India Index of India the important and legit tool for monitoring progress on the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) at the countrywide and State/ Union Territory degrees and Shares the frequent ethos of benchmarking overall performance and ranking on the SDGs to foster competition among the districts.

It presents insights into the social, economic, and environmental status of the vicinity and its districts in their march in the direction of attaining the SDGs.

It is a special coverage tool which has the potential to measure district level progress, highlight quintessential gaps, facilitate resource allocation, and will be a handy tool for coverage makers in the eight North Eastern States, Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region & other Union Ministries.

Out of the 103 districts for ranking, sixty four districts belonged to the Front Runner category whilst 39 districts were in the Performer category in the composite rating and ranking of districts.

All districts in Sikkim & Tripura fall in the Front Runner class & there are no districts in the Achiever categories.

The East Sikkim with a score of 75.87 positioned 1st in the place followed by districts Gomati & North Tripura with a score 75.73] in the 2nd position.

The Mizoram government, in an official letter to the Centre, has called out the Assam government as the aggressor who unleashed violence against Mizoram Police and unarmed civilians on July 26 and added that the situation could have been averted had the CRPF jawans performed their assigned duties.

In a missive to the Union Home ministry’s additional secretary (Northeast) sent recently.Mizoram home secretary Lalbiaksangi said the CRPF personnel on duty had allowed the movement of a large contingent of armed Assam Police personnel without challenging or questioning why it was crossing the duty post towards Mizoram.

She wrote that about 200 Assam Police personnel led by Assam inspector-general of police Anurag Agarwal had come to the Mizoram police duty post at autorickshaw stand, Kawngthar Veng, Vairengte, after crossing the camp of the 225 battalion CRPF, located just below the Mizoram Police duty post around 11.30am on Monday. Around a section of Mizoram police personnel were stationed at the duty post at that time.

Citu seeks Tripura-Myanmar railway link to boost eco ties

The CPMs trade union,Citu, demanded taking forward the previously conceived RAILWAY connectivity project betweenTripuraand Myanmar to build a strong economic and trade circuit across Southeast Asian countries with the progress of the Tripura-Bangladesh rail link.

The former transport minister of the Left Front government and veteran Citu leader, Manik Dey, said the then had in 2016 proposed train connectivity with Myanmar from Tripura viaMizoramconsidering the trade prospect in the region where Tripura would be the biggest beneficiary. But the plan had not progressed.

Besides, the state had a pre-Partition link with Comilla and Chittagong from Belonia and Sabroom of South Tripura respectively. The Bangladesh government has also sanctioned the project to convert metre gauge to broad gauge in the Indian territory along the border to allow access of Indian states to Chittagong seaport and Ashuganj river port. The Agartala (Tripura)-Akhaura (Bangladesh) railway is also expected to be completed very soon.


Manipur adopts 1961 as base year for Inner Line Permit system

The state cabinet on Wednesday resolved to adopt 1961 as for determining the native status for implementation of inner line permit (ILP) inManipur.

Following a protracted mass agitation and chief minister Nongthombam Biren Singh adopting a hard line, the Centre had extended the ILP system in the state in December 2019. It came into effect in Manipur from January 1, 2020, making it the fourth northeastern state after Nagaland, Mizoram andArunachal Pradeshto come under the ILP regime.

Under the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation, 1873, ILP was enforced during British rule. It restricts the entry of outsiders in the state without permission. The system was, however, withdrawn from Manipur in 1950. The ILP checks influx of migrants and saves the culture, identity, tradition and demographic structure of the indigenous people of the state. Chaired by Biren at his office complex, the cabinet also approved the publication of the draft GIS Based Master Plan for Greater Imphal for the horizon year 2041 for inviting opinion and objections.

Tripura-made bamboo carpets roll out on new Parliament building floor

Tripura-madebamboo matshave been used for construction of thenew Parliament building, scheduled to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

TripuraCMManik Saha, holding the portfolio of forest department, reached New Delhi to take part in the opening ceremony.
According to officials here, a private enterprise working in the bamboo sector and manufacturing of value-added products, supplied the bamboo-made carpet mats for construction of the Parliament floor.

The artists from Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh, have installed bamboo carpets with decorations. And the work of stone carving has been done in Rajasthan, the officials added. Besides, bamboo materials from Tripura, significant others construction materials from different states of the country have been used in the construction of the new Parliament building.

Door-to-door survey in Agartala to trace patients

The Tripura government has started house-to-house survey in Agartala (AMC) areas to find out Covid patients.

The Health department has been asked to set up an adequate number of testing centres in each ward and devise the mechanism to bring all symptomatic and suspected cases under Covid testing to contain further spread of the disease.

The survey team comprises community-level health workers, anganwadi workers, representatives of civil administration and AMC. They have been asked to finish the survey work within three days and accordingly the testing of the suspected persons will be carried out in the specific locations.

Border Arunachal village gets 4G

Kibithoo, the last village on the Indo-Tibet border inArunachal Pradesh, on Saturday received 4G mobile connectivity with Airtel providing seamless connectivity to the citizens of the hamlet.

The village is situated in Anjaw district of the state and is nearly 70 km north of the district headquarters Hawai.

This is a giant step towards ensuring seamless connectivity to border villages that will create opportunities for the people by facilitating them access to information.


Scientists in India have produced a pest-resistant, high-yielding soybean variety. MACS 1407, a newly developed variety, is suitable for cultivation in West Bengal, Jharkhand, Assam, Chhattisgarh, and the North-Eastern states, and its seeds will be available to farmers for sowing during the 2022 Kharif season.

In collaboration with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi, scientists from MACS Agharkar Research Institute (ARI), Pune, an autonomous institute of the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India, created the new variety.

The variety was created using the traditional cross-breeding method.

It is suitable for rain-fed conditions in northeast India.

Its seeds have 19.81 per cent oil content, 41 per cent protein content, and good germinability.

Footfall dips by 50% in northeast airports after Covid test curbs

The state governments decision in the northeast asking for mandatory RT-PCR test reports of each passenger or Covid testing on arrival, has resulted in about a 50% decline in footfall in the NE since December last year.

InAssam, however, despite giving relaxation in testing to double-dosed vaccinated passengers, the number of fliers has dropped in the past month due to the intense third wave.

Data procured fromAirports Authority of India(AAI), stated that on December 19, a total of 228 passenger flights operated in the northeast, ferrying 27,600 passengers. Even though the flight operations remained unaffected till January 10 when the number of daily flights operating in the region went up to 242, the decline in passenger footfall was crystal clear at 20,500. However, afterMakar Sankrantifestivities when the third wave turned worse, both flight operations and passenger movement dwindled.

Lawyer appointed 3rd Lokayukta of Tripura

TheTripuragovernment appointed veteran lawyer KNBhattacharjeeas the newLokayuktaof the state to deal with the complaints of Corruption against public servants and administrative functionaries under the Tripura Act, 2008.

Bhattacharjee will be the third Lokayukta of the state and the first-ever lawyer to be appointed to the post. Justice Pradip Kumar Sarkar, former judge of Gujarat and Guwahati high courts, was appointed as the first Lokayukta of Tripura in 2012. He was succeeded by former judge of Kolkata andAndhra Pradeshhigh courts, Justice Subal Baidya, in 2017.

In a notification, the general administration (AR) department said that in exercise of the power conferred by section-3 of the Act, the Governor is pleased to appoint KN Bhattacharjee as Lokayukta of Tripura for a three-year term with effect from the date he assumes charge.
