19.81% female sex workers in Mizoram live with AIDS: NGO

Mizoramhas a high prevalence of HIV/AIDS, which has resulted in community transmission, despite the people’s fight against the virus, said social workers while speaking during a programme to mark the WorldAIDSDay.

State Health ministerR Lalthanglianasaid theHIV transmissionhas penetrated the Society as a large number of people, not belonging to high-risk groups such as drug addicts and sex workers, have been infected. The Mizoram State AIDS Control Society said 25,080 people have been infected withHIVsince 1990, of which 3,294 have died. Nearly 24.68% intravenous drug users and 19.81% femalesex workerslive with AIDS, said Alliance India.

President of India Graces 17th Convocation of Mizoram University

The President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu graced the17thConvocation of Mizoram University at Aizawltoday (November 3, 2022). She alsovirtually inaugurated various Education related projects which includes ST Girls hostels at Mizoram University and at Sairang, Government Aizawl College at Maulpui, permanent campus of Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) at Aizawl and Post Graduate Academic Block at Pachhunga University College.

The President noted that the Mizoram University has three Incubators for providing innovative and practical training to the students. The University has signed MoUs with various universities and organisations at national and international level for various academic and technological collaborations.

She said that this has set a new template for other higher education institutions to explore avenues for collaborating with national and and create new benchmarks of excellence in academic and technological spheres.

85% business recovery in Northeast in October with regular flights

The aviation sector in thenortheasthas taken a big leap forward amid the Covid crisis with passenger and aircraft movement registering 85% recovery. Freight transport has already reached pre-Covid levels, said official sources at the Authority of India’s (AAI) NE regional office.

Just before the outbreak of Covid-19 in India, while the number of aircraft movement in NE airports was 7,173 in February 2020, the same has gone up to 6,382 in October this year after months of no flights. During the same time, passenger footfall, which had dipped by more than half to 3.13 lakh in July 2021, has again touched over 7.04 lakh this October. In February last year, the corresponding figure was 8 lakh.

This credit plan for yak husbandry will help herders in securing loans for strengthening their livelihoods.

This scheme was developed by National Research Centre on Yak (NRCY) located at Dirang in West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh.

NRCY works under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research.

The credit plan started by for yak husbandry was found to be feasible in extending advances with the held Commercial Banks. The credit plan by NABARD has been included in potential linked credit plans (PLCP) of Tawang, West Kameng and Shi Yomi districts of Arunachal Pradesh. This credit plan will boost the livelihood of herders in the state.

Yak is one among the most prized animals in Himalayan region because of its multifarious roles in strengthening nutritional security by providing milk and meat. The animal also provides shelter and clothing through its fibres. It is also used as a beast of burden.

Satyadev Narayan Arya takes oath as 19th Tripura governor

The Chief of Tripura High Court, Akil Kureshi administered the oath of office and secrecy to 84-year-oldSatyadev Narayan Aryaas 19th governor of Tripura on Wednesday atDarbar Hall of historical Puspabantapalace.

Chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb and deputy chief minister Jishnu Dev Varma as well as senior ministers of the state cabinet, the speaker and top officials of the administration attended the ceremony. While introducing the stakeholders, the governor sought cooperation from everyone concerned to continue the development of Tripura.

Satyadev Narayan Arya has been transferred from Haryana and replaced Ramesh Bais who has taken oath as governor of Jharkhand at the same time. Arya was a leader ofBJPand former minister of mines and geology ofBihar.

He is an eight-time winning Member ofBihar Legislative Assemblyfrom Rajgir constituency. He is also a postgraduate in arts and a law graduate fromPatna University.

Arunchal Pradesh witnessed major development push under Modi govt: DyCM

Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein on Sunday said the border state witnessed massive development in the past nine years after Prime Minister Narendra Modi took over as the prime minister of the country in 2014.

The Modi government is raising the northeast region by constructing world-class , Mein told reporters here as part of BJP’s month-long ‘Maha Jan Sampark Abhiyan’ which was launched by party President J P Nadda on May 31.

“Modi conceptualised six development pillars for northeast including roadways, waterways, airways, railways, digital connectivity and hydropower development,” he said, adding that the State Government is also working based on these pillars.

Highlighting the success story of the nine years of the Modi government at the Centre and seven years of the Pema Khandu government in the state, Mein said that the prime minister always insisted on the development of the northeast, without which the country cannot progress.

He said to develop the border areas, the Centre had recently approved a package of Rs 44,000 crore for three mega road projects.

The projects include the two-lane Frontier Highway (1465 km) with an estimated cost of Rs 27,349 crore, two-lane inter-connectivity corridor of 1,048 km worth Rs 15,720 crore and two-lane Brahmakund (Parshuram Kund) to Chowkham road (61 km) worth Rs 915 crore. The total road length of these upcoming projects will be 2,574 km.


‘Use bamboo, adopt carbon-neutral life to fight climate change’

Experts suggested making extensive use of bamboo in the northeastern states to fight the impending threat ofclimate changebesides adopting a carbon-neutral lifestyle and Climate-resilient behaviour while addressing the first Northeastern Regional Sustainability dialogue at Tripura University.

The organising committee member of Global Sustainability Summit-23, Jayanta Choudhury, said the meet was hosted with the different stakeholders of northeastern states, including post-graduate students of different universities here as a pre-event brainstorming ahead of the global meet scheduled on June 14-17 in New Delhi.

“The NE has huge potential to contribute to the of our country, but it remains unexplored. With the support of the Indian Institute of Sustainable Development & Carbon Minus India, we could host the first dialogue at Tripura University, and the major points of discussion and highlights would be presented at the Global Summit where all the policymakers will join,” Choudhury said.


Tripura told to appoint nodal officer for media issues

A 3-member delegation ofPress Council of India(PCI) visitingTripurahas advised the to appoint a nodal officer to deal with media-related issues.

According to reports, all the media organisations here have expressed serious concern and sought action from PCI over the growing attack on journalists and media outlets. As many as 22 journalists in Tripura have been assaulted in the last six months.

Naga Peace pact must be win-win deal, will respect rule of law: NNPG Chief Kitovi


At a critical stage of Naga peace talks and optimistic of a final pact soon, Naga National Political Group (NNPG) leader, N. Kitovi Zhimomi told a group of youth that the new accord should offer “win-win situation for all” and that “the ” must be upheld.

Asked how the Peace pact also caters to the welfare and wishes of thousands of Nagas outside ‘Nagaland state’, he said, “Of course, emotional Naga Integrity is part of our life. I can tell you there is sufficient room for them as well. Our status paper already mentions some of these issues. One will know better what the NNPG is trying to give to our brothers and sisters outside Nagaland state.” However, he said as a negotiating player one had to understand the problems and hurdles the Indian government or Indian Parliament would face.
