Meghalaya CM lays foundation for sports complex upgrade

Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma laid the foundation stone for the upgrade of JN Sports Complex at the Polo Grounds here and said the long-pending project was required for providing a boost to the sector.

He said the revamped sports complex will house a number of facilities and host activities that are important for the youth. He also spoke about a number of programmes in the pipeline for the youth and sportspersons which would be a part of the golden jubilee celebration of the state next year.

Conrad said the state sports policy which had suffered a setback because of the Covid pandemic will soon start rolling after improvement in the situation.

Swachh Survekshan: Assam’s Tezpur named cleanest city in the northeast

Tezpur in northernAssamhas been ranked as the cleanest city in thenortheastin the Population category of 50,000 to 1 lakh in the Swachh Survekshan ratings announced on Saturday.

In the 1 to 10 lakh population category, under which major cities and capitals of NE comes, Dibrugarh is the cleanest in the region ranking 311 followed by Guwahati (312), Nagaon (334), Silchar (346). Out of the 372 cities ranked in this category, Shillong’s ranking is 371. Aizawl is at 359 andImphalis 365. Agartala has been ranked 356, whereas Dimapur is ranked 322. State capital Guwahati has inched up to 312 from 403 scored last year.

Among the states with less than 100 in the northeast, Nagaland is the cleanest, ranking 6th. Interestingly, another tribal-inhabited state Jharkhand topped the list in the same category in India. However, Meghalaya is ranked at 14. Mizoram and Manipur are in the top 10 occupying 9th and 7th positions respectively.

Nine towns from Assam——Tezpur, Golaghat, Bongaigaon,Kokrajhar,Tinsukia, Hailakandi, Haflong, Jorhat and Lakhipur (Cachar) have been able to secure ranks in the Swachh Survekshan League 2021 in different categories.

Golaghat in upper Assam has been adjudged the cleanest city in the northeast in the 25,000 to 50,000 population group. On the other hand, lower Assam’s Bongaigaon is the best city in innovation and practices in the 50,000 to 1 lakh population group.

Swachh Survekshan League was introduced with the objective of sustaining the on-ground performance of cities along with continuous monitoring of service level performance when it comes to cleanliness, hygiene and sanitation.

All northeast states should try to resolve boundary disputes, says Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

Assamchief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma informed the 70th Plenary of the North Eastern Council (NEC) here on Sunday that measures are being taken for an amicable settlement to the inter-state border disputes in the northeast, with 50% of Assam’s boundary row with Meghalaya lready been resolved.

He said processes have been initiated to arrive at a permanent solution to Assam’s boundary dispute with Arunachal Pradesh. Sarma insisted on the need of initiating a concerted effort by the governments of all the northeastern states, if boundary disputes are to be settled once and for all.

Nagaland to host SAAF Cross Country on January 15

Nagaland will host the South Asian Athletics Federation (SAAF) Cross Country Championship in the state capital Kohima on January 15 next year.

Making the announcement during a press conference, Nagaland Athletic Association (NAA) President Abu Metha said the biggest international event ever hosted by the state will be held along with the 56th National Cross Country Race on January 15.

Metha informed that the bid to host the SAAF Cross Country Championship was made by NAA with the committed support of Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio.

Manipur: Mirabai Chanus biopic gets title registration

Manipur-based Seuti Films Production, which began ground work for its latest production, Mirabai Chanu, has registered the title of the movie with Film Forum Manipur (FFM). The biopic is based on the life of Tokyo Olympic 2020 medalist Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, who clinched silver in the 49-kg category in Women‘s weightlifting on July 24, thereby opening Indias first medal tally.

The registration was done at the forums Lamphelpat office here on Thursday in presence of its chairman S Mangoljao, writer of the film Manaobi MM and director OC Meira. FFM chairman S Mangoljao, while stating that the forums executive committee will extend support to the production of the biopic, wished Seuti Films Production a grand success in its venture.

Union MinisterNitin Gadkari inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for 16 national highway projects inManipurwith an of Rs 4,148 crores covering a total length of 298 km.

According to theMinistry of Road Transportand Highways, the projects will provide all-weather connectivity to Manipur with the rest of the country and the neighbouring countries. These highway projects will boost agricultural, industrial and socio-economic progress of the region, besides facilitating Health care and emergency service to the remotest of the areas and generating EMPLOYMENT and self-employment opportunities.

The minister said that water, power, transport and Communication are the four most important things for the development of Industry, for generating employment and eradicating POVERTY.

Tripura eyes self-reliance in animal feed production

Besides setting a target to become self-reliant in fish, egg, meat and milk production in the next five years, theTripuragovernment announced its plan to embark on the mission to become self-reliant on animal feed, which will boost the agrarian economy and create more EMPLOYMENT, said minister for animal resource development, and fisheriesSudhangshu Das.

He said the departments have initiated measures to increase the production of fish, meat, eggs and milk in the state and urged the officials to work on a mission mode with a positive mindset to achieve the target, as still Tripura is importing all those items from other states despite having all potential.

The minister suggested engaging the farmers at the grassroots level and encouraging them to get involved in activities where they will get immediate financial benefits and promote in animal husbandry in the long run.

Das urged officials to explore utilising water bodies to enhance fish production and prioritize regular vaccination to prevent Livestock diseases. As many as 7,713 fish farmers in North Tripura district received benefits under the Chief Ministers Swanirbhar Parivar Yojana while seven self-help groups and Cooperative Societies got assistance for fish farming.

The Tripura government has targeted to bring equilibrium in the demand and supply of fish in the state within the next few years cutting down the dependency on Bangladesh, Assam, West Bengal andAndhra Pradesh. Despite the creation of a huge number of water bodies and scaling up commercial fish production, Tripura is still short of the one-third requirement of the demand, he said.

Tripura has the potential of cultivating fish seeds and production of fish food, innovation of technology, and creation of new species of fish. About Rs 700 crore is spent on importing fish, which the State Government has targeted to plug by increasing domestic fish production.
