US keen to collaborate with Mizoram on connectivity, solid waste management, cyber security

The US is keen to collaborate with Mizoram on connectivity, solid Waste Management, cyber security, research and development in the military, Kolkata-based US Consul General Melinda Pavek said.

Pavek said that apart from land and air connectivity, human mobility, visa issuance for students and businesses, collaborative efforts can be undertaken in the field of innovation and to work with US industries, Solid Waste Management, cyber security, research and development in the military, as per the official. People to people, Government to Government and multilateral collaboration can also be undertaken, the Head of the US Consulate General in Kolkata said.

Lalthangliana mentioned that Mizoram has the lowest Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) and has ranked first among small states in the recently released NITI Aayog‘s Health Index. He also stated that Mizoram has the second highest Literacy rate in India (after Kerala) and applauded the effort of the Church, NGOs and local communities in the fight against Covid-19 pandemic. While mentioning certain developments and ongoing projects in the state such as JICA’s (Japan International Cooperation Agency) funded Cancer Superspeciality Hospital, installation of Oxygen Plants in all districts, addition of ICU beds, World Bank funded Mizoram State Health System Strengthening Project. The Minister also asserted the prevalence of HIV/AIDS, Cancer, Malaria, TB in the state and called for better cooperation to eradicate such diseases from the state.


Most NE states not testing people from regions recording spike

As new variants of the novel coronavirus spread across the country, a sense of fear has returned among the people of the northeast as no state, except Manipur, has issued any order regarding mandatory testing for travellers from areas where a spike in cases has been recorded.

Silchar and Lilabari in Assam and Agartala airport in Tripura have already withdrawn mandatory testing orders. The other airports in Assam, too, plan to discontinue with such practices from March 1. As the Airports Authority of India strictly follows the recommendations of the respective state governments and district administrations so far as testing at airports are concerned, the statutory body also remains in a fix.

Investors showed interest to pump in Rs 1,000 cr in Sikkim: CMSikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has said that investors have expressed interest to pump in Rs 1,000 crore in various sectors in the Himalayan state. He said the government will immediately start implementing investor-friendly policies.Tamang, while addressing a press conference on Friday, said the interest shown by the investors during a G20 meeting on March 16 will be fruitful for the state in the long run.Chief Secretary V B Pathak said representatives of 12 G20 nations had participated in the B20 conference.Investors have shown interest to pump in over Rs 1,000 crore in IT & ITeS, infrastructure, renewable energy, microbrewery, skill development, education, agri-processing, organic farming, forest products and hospitality sectors, he said.Pathak said Costa Rica, which has a 95 per cent dependency on hydropower for its energy needs, wanted to collaborate with Sikkim, which also has a huge hydropower potential.Norway showed interest in small hydro and tunneling activities in Sikkim with disaster mitigation efforts, and Sweden wanted to support the education sector of the Himalayan state, he said.

Northeast Green Summit passes ‘conservation’ baton to Assam govt

The summit which ended on Thursday evening adopted several recommendations for harnessing the economic potential of eco Services, and wildlife conservation in the northeast region and using sustainable technologies in a post-Covid world.

One of the sessions underlined the need for sustainable technological solutions to decompose masks and other accessories being used during the Covid-19 pandemic, while another pointed to the “lack of political will” to save the Environment by strictly enforcing laws.

Vulnerable Arunachal Pradesh draws up roadmap to tackle climate change

Arunachal Pradesh, a highly vulnerable state to https://exam.pscnotes.com/Climate-change”>Climate Change, has come up with the Climate Change Management Mission 2047, a roadmap for the state to contribute to the global efforts to minimise and mitigate the crisis.

The plan aims to attain climate regulation, increase carbon sinks and reduce CO2 emissions, increase green cover, restore the eco-system and improve livelihood and opportunities.

According to records, the state witnessed an increase annual mean temperature of 0.05 degrees Celsius per year and 0.59 degrees Celsius in the past 40 years. From 1980 to 2019, a significant decreasing trend in southwest monsoon rainfall and also in annual rainfall has been observed along with increase in the number of dry spells and decrease in rainy days.

Assam and Arunachal Pradesh are among the eight Indian states which are highly vulnerable to climate change, according to the latest national climate vulnerability assessment report.

These states, mostly in the eastern part of the country, require prioritisation of adaptation interventions, the report pointed out.

Tribal areas ‘unification’: Any state can’t interfere in affairs of others, says Mizoram CM

Making clear his government and party’s stand on ‘greater Mizoram’ or unification of contiguous areas of Manipur, Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga said that a cannot directly interfere in the internal affairs of other states like Manipur.

The tribals belonging to Chin, Kuki, Mizo, Zo, Zomi, who share the same culture, religion, tradition and ancestry, have been living for decades in both Mizoram and Manipur and they, along with the 10 tribal MLAs of Mizoram, demanded a separate state for the tribals.

“Unification of ‘Zo’ tribe inhabited areas of Myanmar and Bangladesh – would be difficult at this time, unification of the ethnic Mizos areas living in Indian states of Manipur, Assam and Tripura had been proposed by the MNF all the time. The issue of unification of all the inhabited areas of our kindred brothers in neighbouring states was highly featured in the peace talks held with the Indian government and the erstwhile underground MNF.”

The MNF, which emerged from Mizo National Famine Front (MNFF) – a platform that protested against the inaction of Centre during the 1959 famine in Mizo areas of Assam, was led by militant leader-turned politician Laldenga which staged an uprising in 1966 and for several years carried out underground activities.

Centre, Manipur govt sign agreement with Zeliangrong United Front

Centre and theManipurgovernment entered into a Cessation of Operation Agreement here in the national capital with theZeliangrong United Front(ZUF) that had been active for more than a decade.

The agreement seeks rehabilitation and re-settlement of the armed cadres, said theMinistry of Home Affairs(MHA) after the agreement was signed in the Ministry’s North Block office.

The agreement was signed by senior officers of theUnion Ministry of Home Affairsand the Government of Manipur and the representatives of ZUF in the presence of Manipur Chief MinisterN BirenSingh.

According to MHA, the move is part of fulfilling the vision of Prime MinisterNarendra Modiof an ‘Insurgency free and prosperous North East’ under the guidance of Union Minister forHome Affairsand Amit Shah.

Meghalaya CM lays foundation for sports complex upgrade

Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma laid the foundation stone for the upgrade of JN Sports Complex at the Polo Grounds here and said the long-pending project was required for providing a boost to the sector.

He said the revamped sports complex will house a number of facilities and host activities that are important for the youth. He also spoke about a number of programmes in the pipeline for the youth and sportspersons which would be a part of the golden jubilee celebration of the state next year.

Conrad said the state sports policy which had suffered a setback because of the Covid pandemic will soon start rolling after improvement in the situation.

Swachh Survekshan: Assam’s Tezpur named cleanest city in the northeast

Tezpur in northernAssamhas been ranked as the cleanest city in thenortheastin the Population category of 50,000 to 1 lakh in the Swachh Survekshan ratings announced on Saturday.

In the 1 to 10 lakh population category, under which major cities and capitals of NE comes, Dibrugarh is the cleanest in the region ranking 311 followed by Guwahati (312), Nagaon (334), Silchar (346). Out of the 372 cities ranked in this category, Shillong’s ranking is 371. Aizawl is at 359 andImphalis 365. Agartala has been ranked 356, whereas Dimapur is ranked 322. State capital Guwahati has inched up to 312 from 403 scored last year.

Among the states with less than 100 in the northeast, Nagaland is the cleanest, ranking 6th. Interestingly, another tribal-inhabited state Jharkhand topped the list in the same category in India. However, Meghalaya is ranked at 14. Mizoram and Manipur are in the top 10 occupying 9th and 7th positions respectively.

Nine towns from Assam——Tezpur, Golaghat, Bongaigaon,Kokrajhar,Tinsukia, Hailakandi, Haflong, Jorhat and Lakhipur (Cachar) have been able to secure ranks in the Swachh Survekshan League 2021 in different categories.

Golaghat in upper Assam has been adjudged the cleanest city in the northeast in the 25,000 to 50,000 population group. On the other hand, lower Assam’s Bongaigaon is the best city in innovation and practices in the 50,000 to 1 lakh population group.

Swachh Survekshan League was introduced with the objective of sustaining the on-ground performance of cities along with continuous monitoring of service level performance when it comes to cleanliness, hygiene and sanitation.
