Town planning schemes may get Maharashtra’s nod by April

Five town planning schemes in thePune Metropolitan Regionare in the final stages of approval from the .

PMRDA is all set to allocate Rs50 cr for each scheme, once it is cleared in the upcoming budget meeting, said officials. The five schemes, requiring 751.55 hectares, will come up inWadachiwadi,Autade Handewadi,Manjari Kolwadi, and two atHolkarwadi, aPune Metropolitan Region Development Authority(PMRDA) official said.

The town planning schemes have been planned as revenue models for the proposed 128-km PMRDA ring road. Altogether 26 town planning schemes are expected along the first 32-km stretch of the proposed ring road.

Data shows 38 per cent OBC population in Maharashtra, commission supports OBC quota in local body polls

The A V Nirgude (retired)-led commission for Backward Classes has supportedMaharashtragovernment’s 27 per cent quota for other backward classes (OBC) in local self-government bodies poll and in its interim report said that data extracted fromSARAL(rural and urban areas) and UDISE indicates that in the state, more than 35 per cent of the Population belongs to OBC.

The commission said it finds data from Systematic Administrative Reforms for Achieving and Learning(SARAL) and UDISE report by the department of Education more reliable”. The UDISE report indicates that the OBC population is 38 per cent, it said.The above sources (SARAL & UDISE), indicates the Percentage of OBC pupils, joined the schools, therefore, it endorses that the percentage of OBCs in Maharashtra may be much more than 38 per cent,” said the report making its authoritative recommendation” to restore and grant 27 per cent political reservation to OBC in the upcoming Elections to the local self government.

The report said, on analyzing the data and documents submitted by the State Government it thought it fit to recommend restoration of 27 per cent quota which is already prescribed by enactments, excluding areas notified by the PESA Act and subject to the permissible upper limit of 50 per cent to OBC category in local self-government, excluding statutory reservation meant for SC and ST.

Set up medical boards under MTP Act, Bombay HC tells Maharashtra govt

Though required to constitute medical boards under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act to diagnose any substantial foetal anomaly, the state ofMaharashtrahas not done so thus far.

The HC noted that under the amendedMTP Actof 2021, the limitation to terminate a pregnancy, while extended from 20 to 24 weeks, carves out an exception in cases of foetal abnormalities.

The medical board has to consist of a gynaecologist, a paediatrician, a radiologist and other members notified by the state, says the amended Act which under section 2 (c) requires every state to notify the board.

“People in various villages of Marathwada are taking an initiative and spending from their pockets for conservation of ancient monuments. The government should look into these monuments and must focus on developing such points from tourism point of view,” he said.

Maharashtra reduces school fee for RTE students

While parents are urging schools to reduce fees in the coming academic year due to continuation of online classes, the state on Wednesday reduced the fees of students enrolled under the Right To Education (RTE) Act by 50 per cent.

Schools, both private and aided, have to reserve 25 per cent seats for students (between ages 6 and 14) based on economic status or caste-based reservations. The fee is reimbursed by the state. The admission is done online. For the academic year 2020-21, the fees forRTE studentshave been fixed at Rs 8,000, said director, primary education, Dattatray Jagtap, in an official statement. In 2019-20, the fees was Rs 17,670.

Maharashtra’s onion exports up by 27% in April-October period

The onion export from Maharashtra has increased by 27% during the April-October period of the current financial year (2022-23) when compared to the same period last year.

According to data provided by the Agricultural and Process Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), which functions under the Union ministry of commerce and , onions export from Maharashtra state increased to 7.32 lakh metric tonne (MT) during the April-October period of the current fiscal, earning foreign currencies amounting to Rs 1,389 crore.

The state had exported 5.9 lakh MT of onions during the same period (April-October) during the previous financial year 2021-22, earning foreign currencies amounting to Rs 1,399 crore.

Last financial year, the onion exporters had got a rate of Rs 2,420 per quintal on Average due to the scarcity of onions. But the onion exporters received comparatively low rates this year as compared to last year due to the huge supply of onions. Onion exporters got a rate of Rs 1,897 per quintal on average.

The state exported 5.78 lakh MT of onions during 2021-22, against 7.9 lakh MT of onions during the previous financial year 2020-21.

90% health, frontline staff in Maharashtra totally vaccinated

Complete vaccination of healthcare and frontline workers inMaharashtraagainst Covid still hovers around 90% despite the state striving to further speed up inoculation following the emergence of the new Omicron variant of the contagion.

The states target was to vaccinate all adult beneficiaries with the first dose and those who had skipped the second shot by December 31. However, Maharashtra is yet to vaccinate 100% beneficiaries in the healthcare and frontline worker categories, with whom the inoculation programme had started.

There are definitely some issues with the data. We have been told that many frontline workers might have taken the vaccine in the general 18-44-year category. The data need to be assessed and the list drawn out to arrive at the final figures before the end of December.

Maharashtra to set up over 3,000 centres to update Aadhaar

More than 3,000 kiosks, banks and post offices will be dedicated to update Aadhaar cards in the state now that the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has directed that documents submitted 10 years ago must be revised. Nearly 750 such centres will be in Pune district itself.

Aadhaar establishes identification through the iris, fingerprint and photographs. The 12-digit unique identification number obtained voluntarily by citizens was launched in 2009. Over the years, it has been used for linking with various schemes as well as the voter ID card and has become arguably the most important identification document. The number is used in different government schemes and Services.

There are more than 50,000 Aadhaar enrolment centres across the country. Recently, the UIDAI tied up with the postal department to have a postman come to a person’s doorstep to update Aadhaar.

Memorial pillar for Shahu Maharaj to come up in Mumbai

A memorial pillar in remberance of Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj will soon be installed in Mumbais Girgaon area, where the legendary king and social reformer had died.

Shahu Maharaj passed away on May 6, 1922, at the Panhala Lodge palace. Several attempts were made to erect the memorial at the said place. However, the land was sold to a trust that has now built a high-rise building at the same spot.
