Karnataka: Better infrastructure is key to economic growth

ASER Report of Karnataka

In March 2021, the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) drafted in Karnataka only this year found that the level of Learning in reading and numeracy has dropped significantly, especially in primary school classes

For the current report, Pratham surveyed 18,385 children between the age of 5 and sixteen from 13,365 households throughout 24 districts. This was accomplished before this year, the first since the COVID-19 pandemic set in.

PeTA India urges Ktaka to spare cows from slaughter, encourage veganism

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PeTA) India has urged theKarnatakagovernment not to amend the Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle (Amendment) Bill, 2020, to allow cow slaughter, and instead tackle the problem of cow overpopulation in the state, by advocating a vegan lifestyle.

Ahuja noted that because cows and buffaloes must be pregnant or have recently given birth in order to produce milk, their bodies are repeatedly violated to be forcibly and crudely artificially inseminated. As male calves cannot produce milk, they are considered waste by the Industry and are typically abandoned, left to starve, or sent for slaughter. When the milk production of female cows and buffaloes wanes, they, too often end up abandoned on the roads or at the butcher, she said.

Karnataka improves ranking in NITI Aayogs SDG Index

Karnataka ranked third in NITI Aayogs Goals (SDGs) India Index for 2020-21, as per a report released on Thursday.

Karnataka improved its score from 66 in 2019-20 to 72 in 2020-21 and improved its ranking from fourth place to third. The State has shown progress in nine of 16 goals.

Along with Karnataka, three other States Andhra Pradesh, Goa, and Uttarakand too scored 72 and ranked third. Kerala (with a score of 75) has been adjudged top performer, while Bihar (50) was the worst-performing State in this years India index. Himachal Pradesh and Tamil Nadu shared the second spot with a score of 74. The Index for SDGs evaluates the progress of States and Union Territories on social, economic, and environmental parameters.

Karnataka improved its scores on indicators related to reducing POVERTY; good Health and well-being; gender Equality; affordable and clean energy; Industry, innovation and Infrastructure; sustainable cities and Communication; responsible consumption and production; and peace, Justice and strong institutions.

Karnataka to get 2 new cybersecurity labs

The Home department will set up two cybersecurity forensic labs with exclusive focus on cybercrime in Shivamogga and Tumakuru. The Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) is awaiting a final order from the government in this regard.

In the recently presented budget, chief minister Basavaraj Bommai had announced the establishment of labs in these districts to strengthen evidence examination and improve the success rate in cybercrime investigation.

According to recent data shared by the department, on an Average, Rs 1 crore is stolen from individuals daily by cybercriminals.Karnatakalost a whopping Rs 363 crore in 2022, while Rs 722 crore has been siphoned off in total since 2019. The data was presented in the legislative council in response to a question asked by MLC M Nagaraj.

The government of Karnataka has launched the ‘Women@Work’ program to provide five lakh jobs within 2026 to women with necessary employable skills.

The program aims to specialize in the efforts of corporate programs on attracting women workforce.It’s been developed by Karnataka Digital economy Mission (KDEM) in association with KTECH, Karnataka Skill development Corporation.

It will act as an enabler for women to actively participate and join the workforce through upskilling.

All efforts are being made to provide 5,000 jobs for women as a part of the Karnataka Digital Economy Mission and added that the govt is keen to actualize this mission in the coming days.

The program launched on Women’s Day aims to focus on the efforts of corporate programs on attracting women workforce and has been developed by Karnataka Digital Economy Mission (KDEM) in association with KTECH, Karnataka Skill Development Corporation.

The program will enable women to join the workforce actively through industry upskilling and reskilling programs, mentorship, and institutional and organizational networking.

BS Yediyurappa may leave tax rates unchanged in new budget

Chief ministerBS Yediyurappais under pressure to fill a large revenue gap in the states finances, but he is unlikely to raise taxes in the forthcoming budget.

The government, experts say, should instead focus on generating more revenue from non-tax sources such as asset monetisation and leverage an additional borrowing window provided by the Centre.

The government had expected tax revenues of more than Rs 1.1 lakh crore in 2020-21, but it is likely to miss the target by at least Rs 5,000 crore because of the economic disruption triggered by the pandemic. Revenue from commercial taxes and duties on liquor sales has improved strongly, but stamp & registration duty and motor vehicle tax collections have lagged.

Karnataka has limited scope to alter taxes in the GST regime. It can propose rates for only commodities such as petroleum products and liquor, apart from property and vehicle registration.

Jakanacharis sculptures part of Karnatakas heritage

Shiradi Ghat closure: Ktaka may lose 50% cargo to other states

The proposed six-month closure of Shiradi Ghat a major link between the coast and Bengaluru would cause huge revenue losses to the state in terms of cargo flowing to the New Mangalore , the gateway ofKarnataka.

New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) says export-import traders, Karnataka state andNMPTitself could lose up to 50% of the cargo flowing in through National Highway-75 to other states. It says exporters and importers will face huge losses due to increased transportation cost, which will make their goods dearer in international markets denting future orders.

The presentation, given to the Kanara Chamber of Commerce, says a closure negatively impacts movement of essential commodities.
