Karnataka hits back, vows special aid for Kannada schools in Maharashtra

With theSupreme Courtset to hear petitions on Karnataka-Maharashtra border dispute from Wednesday, the one-upmanship between the two states has escalated, withKarnatakachief minister BasavarajBommaion Tuesday announcing his governments decision to offer special grants to Kannada-medium schools inMaharashtraand pension to Kannadigas in the neighbouring state who fought for unification of the state.

The move comes close on the heels of Maharashtra chief minister Shinde promising pension to freedom fighters from Belagavi and other parts in Karnataka, which are claimed by Maharashtra. Shinde also spoke of extending benefits of Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Jan Arogya Yojana (cashless medical care) for such freedom fighters.

Maharashtra, since its inception in 1960, has been entangled in a dispute with Karnataka over the status of Belgaum (renamed Belagavi) and 80 other Marathi-speaking villages in the southern state.

Karnataka celebrates Kanakadasa Jayanthi

Karnataka celebrated Kanakadasa Jayanthi on November 22, 2021 to pay tribute to Shri Kanaka Dasa, who was the 15th century poet, saint and social reformer.

On the occasion, Chief Minister Basavaraja Bommai garlanded the photograph of Kanaka Dasa in Bengaluru.

Kanaka Dasa had advocated social and Justice through kirtans.

Kaginele was the birthplace of Saint Kanaka Dasa. Government of Karnataka refurbished it, for the convenience of public visiting there.

This festival is celebrated by people of Karnataka and Kuruba community in Karnataka. It is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of saint Kanaka Dasa, every year. In tribute to him, Government of Karnataka has declared this day as state holiday. Year 2021 marked the 527-birth anniversary.

Kanaka Dasa was a Haridasa, and a renowned composer of Carnatic Music, poet, musician and philosopher. He is famous for his keertanas and ugabhoga, compositions for Carnatic Music. He used simple Kannada language for his compositions. He was born in Baada village, near Bankapura. The saint was warrior at Bankapura fort.

October 23: Karnataka celebrates Kittur Rani Chennamma Jayanthi

On the occasion, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj S Bommai garlanded the statue of Queen in Hubbali in Dharwad district.

A sum of 50 crore rupees will be sanctioned in the year 2021 for the Kittur Development Authority.

Kittur Chennamma

Kittur Chennamma was born on October 23, 1778. She belonged to the Lingayat community. She married Raja Mallasarja from the Desai family when she was 15. She was Indian Queen of Kittur which was a princely state in Karnataka. She led an Armed Rebellion in the year 1824, against the British East India Company (BEIC). She rebelled in confrontation of the in a bid to maintain Indian control over the region. In the fight, she defeated the British. However, she was dead in the imprisonment of second rebellion by BEIC. She was one of the first female rulers who rebel against British rule. She became a folk hero in Karnataka. She also became a symbol of independence movement in India.

The district is 25 years old, but it is yet to get an industrial corridor though it has good connectivity and geographical advantages. As per a decent survey conducted by the department of industries and commerce (DIC), over 125 entrepreneurs are eager to start industries near the district headquarter and they have demanded over 800 acres of land for setting up an industrial corridor.

Meanwhile, theKFCCIhas also placed a demand for land. The DIC has identified land near Ganajur andKolurvillages. The District Administration is negotiating with farmers for land. Chief ministerBasavaraj Bommaiwill hold a meeting next week in Bengaluru regarding Haveri industrial corridor and industrialists and traders are hoping that their long pending demand will come true soon.

Mapping of Myristica swamps crucial for conservation

Researchers have suggested a large-scale project to map and carry out further research on Myristica swamps across the Western Ghats, in order to consolidate conservation and restoration efforts. Comprehensive documentation of these remaining swamps, the species and their , and local threats, will allow better protection of these relic forests.

Swamps should be declared as community conservation areas, and conservation work must focus on the restoration of degraded swamps, and their Biodiversity Elements. Further, the encroached land that is currently under alternative land use must be restored to its original habitat, and watershed quality revived in these regions.

The swamps of the Western Ghats harbour several rare-relic oristic and faunal taxa, comprising many endemic and threatened species. One of the most unique and primeval Ecosystems, they once formed a large hydrological Network, but due to increased human pressure, these now exist as small isolated pockets, and are one of the most threatened ecosystems in India. The Western Ghats is one of 36 global biodiversity hotspots, occupying less than 6% of Indias land cover. Despite its high biodiversity, only 9% of the Western Ghats falls within the Protected Area Network (PAs).

A week after the Karnataka government permitted cinema halls to reopen, the film industry in the state is still holding back on going ahead with exhibiting movies. It is citing the 50% cap on audiences and the lack of new movies for its hesitancy.

A delegation from theKarnataka Film Chamber of Commerce, including its vice-president, Umesh Banakar, on Friday met chief minister BS Yediyurappa and submitted a memorandum urging the government to allow theatres to operate at 100% capacity. They also sought a go-ahead to commence indoor shooting.

There are about 630 single-screen theatres in the state and 260 multiplexes with four lakh seats. Twelve lakh employees are dependent on the . There are about 130 theatres in Bengaluru alone, 110 under BBMP limits.

The government recently waived property tax for single-screen theatres for 2020-21 to help them overcome losses.KFCCsays the 630 single-screen theatres in Karnataka paid Rs 10 crore property tax to the government.

‘Special darshan’ for elders in 400+ Karnataka temples

After the successful rollout of the Shakti scheme, the on Wednesday ordered a ‘SpecialDarshan’ facility for devotees aged 65 years and above, in all muzrai temples ofKarnataka.

Devotees can henceforth avail direct darshan of deities by producing their Aadhaar cards or any other valid age proof at ‘A’ and ‘B’ category temples under the muzrai department.

The facility can be availed in 400-plus temples, including Subrahmanya Temple at Kukke, Mookambika temple at Kollur, Chamundeshwari temple in Mysuru, Nanjundeshwara temple at Nanjangud, Mahadeshwara temple at MM Hills, Saundatti Yellamma temple in Belagavi and Banashankari temple, Bull Temple and Gavigangadhareshwara temple in Bengaluru.

Karnataka to set up memorial for corona warriors

Tamil Nadu gears up to assess anaemia in students

The statehealth departmentwill send its doctors, nurses and Health staff to schools and colleges to tackle one of the biggest public health problems among teens inTamil Naduanaemia. Among adolescents, nearly half the girls and a quarter of boys suffer from iron deficiency, limiting their development, increasing risks of infections and decreasing physical and mental fitness.

The state will hold more than 25,000 health camps in schools and colleges along with more than 2,127 primary health centres to measure the health status, particularly anaemia, of more than 1.08 crore students.

Data from the fifth edition of the National family health survey (2020 – 2021) showed that 52.9% of adolescent girls and 24.6% among adolescent boys have anaemia. “The aim of this screening is to make Nadu an anaemia-free state. By doing this, we anticipate a gradual decrease in maternal and infant mortality rates in the years to come.

In Karnataka, several members of the HakkiPikki Tribe survived Covid-19.Highlights:

The Gujrathioa, Kaliwala, Mewara, and Panwara clans of the HakkiPikki tribes are semi-nomadic tribal people.

They speak a variety of south Indian languages, including Kannada, , Telugu, and Malayalam, as well as Vagribooli, a Guajarati-like language.

In Kannada, the HakkiPikki means “bird catchers.”

In Karnataka, it is classified as a Scheduled Tribe.

Origin and HISTORY:

The HakkiPikki tribal groups have a long history that includes an ancestor who is said to be related to the legendary Ranapratap Singh.

The HakkiPikki tribal community is a Kshatriya or warrior tribal group that was forced to move to southern India after defeating Mughal rulers.
