New parking policy: Facilities in offing, fines loom

The citys civic body has set up a Traffic and Parking Cell to implement the new parking policy.

The first meeting of the cell was held recently in which various challenges in the implementation of the policy and issues relating to traffic and parking were discussed. During the meeting, various decisions were made including the creation of sub-committees to implement the policy. The civic body will also formulate bylaws of the policy. The civic body will shortly upload a list of parking spots in the city on its official web portal. After the list is declared, citizens who park their vehicles elsewhere will be fined by traffic Police. It was also decided to launch a drive to keep footpaths and roads encroachment-free.

Traffic police will seize any unclaimed vehicles on roadsides. Apart from that, it was decided that the cell will identify more spots for parking vehicles and declare them.

The draft parking policy was okayed by the AMC and was sent to the for approval.

The state government approved the policy and it was implemented from November 1, 2021.

GST billing: Rs 32,310 crore of fake transactions in 4.5 years in Gujarat

Ever since the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime was rolled out in July 2017, fake billing scams have continued to drain government coffers in Gujarat. The data of the state commercial tax department suggests that stateGSTofficials have detected fake billing transactions to the tune of Rs 32,310 crore inGujarattill December 2021. About 1,875 shell companies were involved in various cases that led to the draining of Rs 4,264 crore from government coffers through fraudulent claims for input tax credit (ITC).

The as well as the Centre are introducing policy measures to plug loopholes but the constantly changing modus operandi has only led to a surge in the number of cases reported year after year.

From April to December 2021, about 1,172 cases of fake billing were detected by the state authorities. That shows a 67% jump in cases over the numbers of the previous three years combined (2018-19, 2019-20, and 2020-21), during which about 703 cases of fake billing scams were detected, stated officials of theSGSTdepartment.

Gujarats power equipment makers train sights on foreign shores

Once a flourishing in the state,power equipment makerslost business over the last few years due to a sharp fall in orders from theGujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd(GUVNL). And the protection policies in other states implemented by power distribution companies (DISCOMs) to protect their local manufacturers added to the woes of the industry in Gujarat.

Power equipment manufacturers from Gujarat have now begun looking abroad for greener pastures. Several small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have either tied up withpower equipmentmakers in other countries or are scouting forgood firmsto forge joint ventures.

Vadodara is considered a hub for electrical equipment manufacturing, and just four years ago it commanded 30% of the market in power equipment in the country.

But the industry is now struggling to survive and has demanded that Gujarat DISCOMs should increase reservation of business from the current 50% to 75% for local power equipment manufacturers.

Setting up joint ventures with local firms in African countries like Congo, Kenya,Tanzania, Uganda, and others is a lucrative business proposition for Indian SMEs. But they have to be cautious as the Chinese power equipment makers have already forayed into Africa and are dominating the markets there.

Gujarat govt to stop allotting city space for polluting units

For the first time, a thorough guideline to strike off provisions for chemical Plants in development plans and town planning schemes of eight municipal corporations and 156 nagarpalikas will be released by the state urban development department, a few weeks after Diwali.

The state’s urban development department has already requested from the Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) a list of chemical unit types, to be included in the new upcoming guidelines. These units should be producing hazardous chemicals, disposing of toxic waste, or having chimneys that vent dangerous industrial gases. Back in July last year, the Vijay Rupani government had initiated discussions in this direction.

Incentives in terms of taxes and exemptions will be provided to existing industries to shift to new designated locations outside the city. Gujarat has third-highest ratio of vehicles per family

Gujarat: Lok Adalats resolve 3 lakh cases, Rs 767 crore paid in settlements

Gujarats judiciary disposed as many as 3.03 lakh cases during aNational Lok Adalatorganized at district courts across the state, the firstLok Adalatheld in courtrooms after the Covid-19 pandemic set in.

Thousands of FIRs that were registered against people for lockdown violations, with charges of violation of the Police notification, under the Epidemic Diseases Act and Disaster Management Act, were also disposed of. These cases were taken up during special sittings in courts alongside the Lok Adalat, said a judicial officer.

According to the Gujarat State Legal Services Authority, under whose aegis the Lok Adalat was held, a total of 2,78,697 pending cases and 24,345 pre-litigation cases were disposed of. In all, disputes involving accident claims were settled and amounts to the tune of Rs 767.76 crore were paid to claimants. These disputes included a case in which a claim of Rs 71.25 lakh was paid to a litigant at the Mirzapur rural court in Ahmedabad.

Gujarat institutes shine in NIRF 2023

The ministry of Education on Monday released the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2023, which ranks educational institutions based on various criteria. It was a good year for Gujarat-based institutions as many improved their ranks from 2022.

However, only three institutes managed to get Top 10 rankings in their categories. IIM Ahmedabad (IIM-A) kept its No. 1 position in the management category, whileGujaratNational Law University (GNLU) improved its ranking from eighth last year to seventh this year. CEPT University in architecture category was at the seventh rank. There were no new entrants from the state.

IIT Gandhinagar (IIT-Gn) jumped 13 positions in the overall category from 37th to 24th rank. In the research category, the institute is up by three spots from 34 to 31, and in engineering it is up from 23 to 18.

Gujarat to showcase Indias maritime glory at Lothal

The Union ministry of , shipping and waterways and theUnion ministry of culturesigned an MoU for Cooperation in development of National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) inLothalinGujarat. Union minister of state for ports, shipping and waterwaysMansukh Mandaviyaand Union minister of state for culture Prahlad Singh Patel were present during the ceremony to sign the MoU.

The NMHC will be developed in the vicinity of the ASI site of Lothal, located about 80km from Ahmedabad. The complex will be developed as an international tourist destination, where the maritime heritage of India from ancient to modern times will be showcased. The edutainment approach using the latest technology will be adopted to spread awareness about Indias maritime heritage.

For developing the project, the land transfer formalities have been completed and all land-related clearances and the environmental nod have been obtained.

Gujarat among top states facing malware & botnet attacks: Report

Gujaratis facing a string of malware and botnet attack attempts on its digital networks across offices in major cities and central data servers- both private and of the government.

The attacks are exploiting vulnerabilities in systems and even running email phishing campaigns to penetrate networks.

The Quick Heal Cyber Threat Weather (CTW) report for the first quarter of 2023 puts Surat and Ahmedabad cities on the sixth and eight positions in the country when it comes to malware attack attempts, registering 2.74 million and 1.83 million attempts respectively.

At 8.81 million attack attempts, Gujarat ranks second in the country after Maharashtra, which registered 10.52 million attempts.

Another report called the ‘Spamhaus live botnet threats worldwide map’ showed three botnets that have been active in Gujarat over the last one week — Mirai, Stealrat and Gamut.

Malware is defined as a Software built for the purpose of disrupting or damaging a computer system, and has existed almost as long as the Internet itself.
