Selection Process of UPSC IFOS Exam 2024

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the Indian Forest Service (IFS) Examination annually to recruit officers for the Indian Forest Service. The selection process for the IFS Exam 2024 involves three stages:

Stage 1: Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination

The Preliminary Examination is a screening test, consisting of two objective-type papers:

Paper 1: General Studies

Paper 2: Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT)

Note: The CSAT paper is qualifying in nature, with a minimum qualifying marks of 33%. Candidates must clear the CSAT paper to be eligible for the Main Examination.

Stage 2: Civil Services (Main) Examination

The Main Examination is a written examination, consisting of nine papers:

Paper 1: Essay

Paper 2: General Studies I

Paper 3: General Studies II

Paper 4: General Studies III

Paper 5: General Studies IV

Paper 6: Optional Subject – Paper 1

Paper 7: Optional Subject – Paper 2

Paper 8: Forestry

Paper 9: Agriculture

Note: The Main Examination is conducted in offline mode, with candidates required to write answers in their own handwriting.

Stage 3: Interview/Personality Test

The Interview/Personality Test is conducted by a Board of experts, who assess the candidate’s suitability for the Indian Forest Service. The interview is designed to assess the candidate’s:

Duration: 30 minutes to 45 minutes

Maximum Marks: 300

Note: The Interview/Personality Test is conducted in English.

Final Selection

The final selection of candidates for the Indian Forest Service is based on the combined score of the Main Examination and the Interview/Personality Test. The candidates are ranked based on their combined score, and the top-ranking candidates are offered appointments to the Indian Forest Service.

Preliminary Paper 2: CSAT Comprehension, Interpersonal skills including communication skills, Logical reasoning and analytical ability, Decision-making and problem-solving, General mental ability, Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, percentages, decimals, fractions, ratios, proportions, basic algebraic equations, etc.), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc.).
Main Paper 1: Essay Candidates are required to write essays on various topics of general interest.
Main Paper 2: General Studies I Indian Heritage and Culture, History and Geography of the World and Society.
Main Paper 3: General Studies II Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International Relations.
Main Paper 4: General Studies III Technology, Economic Development, Bio-diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management.
Main Paper 5: General Studies IV Ethics, Integrity and Aptitude.
