Major Somnath Sharma.<\/p>\n<p>Major Somnath Sharma was the first recipient of the Param Veer Chakra, India&#8217;s highest military decoration, awarded for conspicuous gallantry. He was posthumously awarded the Param Veer Chakra for his bravery during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947-1948.<\/p>\n<p>On 3 November 1947, Sharma was commanding a company of the 4th Battalion, Kumaon Regiment, when they were attacked by a large Pakistani force at the village of Nowshera. Sharma led his men in a fierce battle, but they were outnumbered and outgunned. Sharma was killed in action, but his bravery inspired his men to continue fighting, and they eventually repulsed the Pakistani attack.<\/p>\n<p>Sharma was born in 1923 in the village of Sialkot, Punjab, British India. He joined the Indian Army in 1942 and was commissioned into the 4th Battalion, Kumaon Regiment. He served in the Second World War and was awarded the Military Cross for his bravery.<\/p>\n<p>After the war, Sharma remained in the Indian Army and was posted to the 4th Battalion, Kumaon Regiment.
