It is a centrally sponsored scheme implemented by the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India. The objective of NRLM is to eradicate rural poverty by empowering rural women through self-help groups (SHGs).<\/p>\n<p>NRLM is a demand-driven and community-based program. It works through a network of SHGs, which are formed by rural women. SHGs are provided with financial and technical support by NRLM. They are also trained in various skills, such as bookkeeping, marketing, and entrepreneurship.<\/p>\n<p>NRLM has been successful in empowering rural women and reducing rural poverty. As of 2017, over 70 million women have been organized into SHGs under NRLM. These SHGs have mobilized over Rs. 1 lakh crore (US$ 15 billion) in savings. They have also taken loans of over Rs. 50,000 crore (US$ 7.5 billion) from banks and other financial institutions.<\/p>\n<p>NRLM has also been successful in promoting rural entrepreneurship. SHGs have set up over 10 million enterprises under NRLM.
