He was leading his section when they came under heavy fire from the Germans. Chhelu Ram was hit by a bullet but continued to lead his men forward. He was eventually killed by a second bullet, but not before he had helped to capture a German trench.<\/p>\n<p>Chhelu Ram&#8217;s actions were described as &#8220;conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty&#8221; and he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross.
