It is one of the 24 districts of Jharkhand state in India. The district headquarters is Chatra town. The district is bounded by Hazaribagh district to the north, Palamu district to the east, Garhwa district to the south, and Latehar district to the west. The district has a population of 1,346,960 (2011 census) and an area of 3,297 km2. The district is predominantly rural, with only 15% of the population living in urban areas. The main languages spoken in the district are Hindi, Magahi, and Urdu. The district is home to a number of tribal groups, including the Oraon, Munda, and Kharia. The main economic activities in the district are agriculture, forestry, and mining.
