He was appointed to the position on 14 May 1953 by the then Chief Minister, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah. Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad served as Deputy Chief Minister until 1965, when he was appointed Chief Minister. He remained Chief Minister until 1975.<\/p>\n<p>Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad was born in 1907 in the village of Sopore in the Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir. He was educated at the Aligarh Muslim University and the University of Cambridge. After graduating from Cambridge, Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad returned to Jammu and Kashmir and joined the Indian National Congress. He was elected to the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly in 1937.<\/p>\n<p>Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad was a close associate of Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah. He played a key role in the Quit Kashmir movement in 1946-47. After the partition of India, Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad was appointed Minister for Home and Law in the first government of Jammu and Kashmir. He was also the President of the National Conference.<\/p>\n<p>Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad was a controversial figure. He was accused of corruption and nepotism. He was also accused of suppressing dissent in Jammu and Kashmir.
