Under this system, the zamindars, or landlords, were responsible for collecting taxes from the peasants and then paying a portion of the collected taxes to the Mughal government. The zamindars were given a great deal of power and autonomy under this system, and they often used their power to exploit the peasants.<\/p>\n<p>The zamindari system was abolished in 1950, after India gained independence from British rule.
