The average elevation of the state is 1,200 meters (3,900 feet), and the highest point is Mount Saramati, which is 3,841 meters (12,608 feet) tall. The steep slopes of the Himalayas are prone to soil erosion, especially during heavy rains.<\/li>\n<li>Heavy rainfall: Manipur receives an average of 1,500-2,000 mm (60-80 inches) of rain per year. The monsoon season, which runs from June to September, is the wettest time of year. The heavy rains can cause landslides and soil erosion.<\/li>\n<li>Shifting cultivation: Shifting cultivation, also known as slash-and-burn agriculture, is a traditional farming practice that is used in many parts of the world. In shifting cultivation, farmers clear a small area of forest, burn the vegetation, and then plant crops in the ash-enriched soil. After a few years, the farmers move to a new area and allow the old area to regenerate. Shifting cultivation can be a sustainable farming practice if it is done on a small scale and if the farmers allow the land to regenerate for a long enough period of time.
