They were founded by Dantidurga in 735 CE, and their capital was initially at Manyakheta (modern Malkhed). The Rashtrakutas overthrew the Chalukyas of Badami in 753 CE, and they went on to rule over a large empire that included much of the Deccan Plateau. The Rashtrakutas were patrons of the arts and literature, and they built many temples and other monuments.
