It is named after the Marathi poet and writer Vishnu Vaman Shirwadkar, also known as Kusumagraj. The award was instituted in 1989 by the Government of Maharashtra. It is given annually to a Marathi writer for a lifetime of literary achievement. The jury is appointed by the Government of Maharashtra. The award is presented at a function held in Mumbai.<\/p>\n<p>The Kusumagraj National Literature Award is one of the most prestigious literary awards in India. It is a recognition of the highest literary achievement in Marathi literature. The award has been given to some of the most celebrated Marathi writers, including P. L. Deshpande, V. S. Khandekar, and Vijay Tendulkar.<\/p>\n<p>The award is a great honor for any Marathi writer.
