He was a general in the army of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the ruler of the Sikh Empire. In 1822, Ranjit Singh gave Gulab Singh the jagir (estate) of Jammu. Gulab Singh expanded his territory by conquering neighboring areas, and in 1846 he was recognized by the British as the Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir.
