He was a Greek philosopher and polymath during the Classical period in Ancient Greece. Taught by Plato, he was the founder of the Lyceum, the Peripatetic school of philosophy, and the Aristotelian tradition. His writings cover many subjects including physics, biology, zoology, metaphysics, logic, ethics, esthetics, poetry, theater, music, rhetoric, psychology, linguistics, economics, politics, meteorology, geology and government. When Nicomachus died when Aristotle was a child, his guardian Proxenus sent him to Athens to study at Plato&#8217;s Academy. Aristotle remained at the Academy for 20 years, until Plato&#8217;s death in 347 BC. After Plato&#8217;s death, Aristotle left Athens and traveled to Asia Minor, where he worked as a tutor to the young Alexander the Great. In 335 BC, Aristotle returned to Athens and founded his own school, the Lyceum. He taught at the Lyceum for 12 years, until his death in 322 BC.<\/p>\n<p>Aristotle&#8217;s writings cover a wide range of subjects, including physics, biology, zoology, metaphysics, logic, ethics, esthetics, poetry, theater, music, rhetoric, psychology, linguistics, economics, politics, meteorology, geology and government. He is considered one of the greatest philosophers of all time, and his work has had a profound influence on Western thought.<\/p>\n<p>Aristotle&#8217;s contributions to biology are particularly significant. He was the first to classify animals into different groups, and he developed a theory of evolution based on the idea that species change over time. He also studied the anatomy of animals, and he wrote extensively on the subject.
