Gen. K.M. Cariappa.<\/p>\n<p>Gen. Cariappa was the first Indian Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army. He was appointed to the position on 15 August 1947, the day India gained independence from British rule. He served in the position until 1953.<\/p>\n<p>Gen. Cariappa was born in 1899 in British India. He joined the British Indian Army in 1918 and served in World War I. After the war, he continued to serve in the army and rose through the ranks.
