He was born in Kundagrama, a village in the present-day Indian state of Bihar, in the 6th century BCE. He was the son of Siddhartha and Trishala, and he was raised in a royal family. However, he renounced his wealth and privilege at the age of 30 to pursue a life of asceticism. He spent the next 12 years meditating and practicing austerities, and he eventually attained enlightenment. He then spent the remaining 30 years of his life teaching others about the path to liberation.
