Hibernation is a state of inactivity in which an animal reduces its metabolic rate and body temperature in order to survive during periods of low food availability, such as winter. Aestivation is a similar state of inactivity that occurs during periods of high heat and humidity, such as summer.<\/p>\n<p>In both hibernation and aestivation, animals reduce their metabolic rate in order to conserve energy.
