The two are deeply in love and have a son named Arivazhagan. However, their happiness is short-lived when Kovalan is seduced by a courtesan named Madhavi. Kannagi is heartbroken and banishes Kovalan from their home.<\/p>\n<p>Kovalan eventually returns to Kannagi, but he is now a changed man. He is no longer the wealthy merchant he once was, and he is now addicted to gambling and drinking. Kannagi tries to help him, but he refuses to change his ways.<\/p>\n<p>One day, Kovalan is falsely accused of stealing a necklace from the queen. He is arrested and sentenced to death. Kannagi is devastated and goes to the king to plead for her husband&#8217;s life. The king refuses to listen to her, and Kovalan is executed.<\/p>\n<p>Kannagi is filled with rage and vows to avenge her husband&#8217;s death. She goes to the temple and prays to the gods for help. The gods answer her prayers, and she is able to burn down the city of Madurai with her tears.<\/p>\n<p>The king is so impressed by Kannagi&#8217;s courage and determination that he orders the construction of a temple in her honor. The temple is still standing today, and it is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Tamil Nadu.<\/p>\n<p>Silappatikaram is a beautiful and moving story of love, loss, and revenge.
