He received his B.A. in economics from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, in 1985, and his M.A. and Ph.D. in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1988 and 1991, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Rajan joined the University of Chicago Booth School of Business in 1991. He was promoted to full professor in 1998 and served as the school&#8217;s dean from 2003 to 2006.<\/p>\n<p>Rajan is a member of the Group of Thirty, an international body of financial leaders, and the International Monetary Fund&#8217;s External Advisory Group. He is also a co-founder of the Initiative for Policy Dialogue, a think tank that promotes economic development in developing countries.<\/p>\n<p>Rajan has written extensively on financial markets, economic development, and monetary policy. He is the author of several books, including &#8220;Fault Lines: How Hidden Fractures Still Threaten the World Economy&#8221; (2010) and &#8220;The Third Pillar: How Markets and the State Hold the Key to the Future&#8221; (2015).<\/p>\n<p>In 2013, Rajan was appointed as the 23rd Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. He was the first Indian-born economist to hold the position. During his tenure as Governor, Rajan focused on strengthening the Indian economy and reducing inflation. He also played a key role in the government&#8217;s efforts to combat the global financial crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Rajan stepped down as Governor of the Reserve Bank of India in September 2016.
