He was an Austrian physician and immunologist who won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1930 for his discovery of the ABO blood group system.<\/p>\n<p>Landsteiner was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1868. He studied medicine at the University of Vienna and received his doctorate in 1891. After working as a research assistant at the University of Vienna, Landsteiner moved to the United States in 1902. He worked at the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research in New York City until his retirement in 1939.<\/p>\n<p>Landsteiner&#8217;s research on blood groups began in the early 1900s. He was interested in the problem of transfusion reactions, which were often fatal at the time. Landsteiner found that there were three main types of human blood: A, B, and O. He also discovered that antibodies could be found in the blood of some people that would attack the red blood cells of other people.
