The first atomic bomb was tested in the desert of New Mexico on July 16, 1945. Three days later, two atomic bombs were dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki killed an estimated 200,000 people and led to the surrender of Japan.<\/p>\n<p>After the war, Oppenheimer became a vocal critic of nuclear weapons. He argued that nuclear weapons were too dangerous to be used and that the United States should work to eliminate them. In 1954, Oppenheimer was stripped of his security clearance by the U.S. government.
