The Act was passed by the Parliament of India on 15 June 2005 and came into effect on 12 October 2005.<\/p>\n<p>The RTI Act applies to all government bodies, including central government ministries and departments, state governments and their departments, local governments, statutory bodies, and public corporations.<\/p>\n<p>The RTI Act provides for a three-tier mechanism for seeking information:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The first tier is the Public Information Officer (PIO), who is responsible for responding to requests for information.<\/li>\n<li>The second tier is the State Information Commission (SIC), which is an independent body that hears appeals against decisions of the PIO.<\/li>\n<li>The third tier is the Central Information Commission (CIC), which is the apex body that hears appeals against decisions of the SIC.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The RTI Act has been hailed as a landmark legislation that has ushered in a new era of transparency and accountability in the Indian government.
