    In addition to these six grounds, the Act also provides for a seventh ground on which a Muslim wife can seek divorce, namely, cruelty<\/strong>. However, the definition of cruelty under the Act is very narrow and it is difficult for a wife to prove that her husband has been cruel to her.<\/p>\n

    The Dissolution of Muslim Marriages Act, 1939, is a landmark piece of legislation that has given Muslim women greater rights in marriage and divorce. However, the Act is still not perfect and there are a number of areas where it can be improved.
