Three types of emergencies have been envisaged under the Indian Constitution:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>National Emergency:<\/strong> This can be declared by the President if he is satisfied that a grave emergency exists whereby the security of India or any part of the territory thereof is threatened, whether by war or external aggression or armed rebellion.<\/li>\n<li><strong>President&#8217;s Rule:<\/strong> This can be imposed by the President on a State if he is satisfied that a situation has arisen in which the government of the State cannot be carried on in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Financial Emergency:<\/strong> This can be declared by the President if he is satisfied that the financial stability or credit of India or any part of the territory thereof is threatened.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The President&#8217;s Rule is the most common type of emergency that has been declared in India. It has been imposed on 35 occasions since independence. The National Emergency was declared only once, in 1975.
