The sulfuric acid protonates the oxygen of the carboxylic acid, making it more electrophilic. The isobutylene then attacks the protonated carboxylic acid, forming a tetrahedral intermediate. The tetrahedral intermediate collapses, expelling water and forming the acylium ion.
