He was born in 1922 in the village of Mandal in the Garhwal Himalayas. He was educated at the local school and then at the Government Inter College in Srinagar. After completing his education, he worked as a teacher for some time. In 1962, he joined the Indian Army and served in the Indo-China War. After his retirement from the army, he returned to his village and started working for the upliftment of the people. He was one of the main leaders of the Chipko Movement, which was a non-violent movement to protect the forests of the Himalayas. He was arrested several times for his participation in the movement.
