World Humanitarian Day is observed annually on August 19th to pay tribute to aid workers who risk their lives in humanitarian service and to rally support for people affected by crises around the world.

The date was chosen to commemorate the 2003 bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq, which killed 22 people, including the Chief Humanitarian in Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello.
