The award recognized his outstanding contributions towards social, economic, and political transformation through non-violent and Gandhian methods.

The Gandhi Peace Prize is an annual award instituted by the Government of India. The award for 2019 was given to Late Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said of Oman. The winners are selected by a jury chaired by the Prime Minister of India.
