The Union Finance Minister is the Chairperson of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council.

The GST Council is a constitutional body under Article 279A of the Constitution of India. The Union Finance Minister is designated as the Chairperson of the Council. The Union Minister of State in charge of Revenue or Finance is a member, and the Minister in charge of Finance or Taxation or any other Minister nominated by each State Government is also a member.

The GST Council makes recommendations to the Union and State Governments on issues relating to GST. Decisions in the Council are taken by a three-fourths majority of the weighted votes of the members present and voting. The vote of the Central Government has a weightage of one-third of the total votes cast, and the votes of all the State Governments taken together have a weightage of two-thirds of the total votes cast.
