After ending her long fast in August 2016, Irom Sharmila announced her intention to enter politics and subsequently launched a political party named the People’s Resurgence and Justice Alliance (PRJA) in Manipur.
Irom Sharmila is known as the “Iron Lady of Manipur” for her 16-year hunger strike against the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in the state. Her political foray was aimed at contesting elections to repeal the controversial law.
She contested the 2017 Manipur Legislative Assembly election from the Thoubal constituency against then Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh but received very few votes, indicating a lack of electoral success despite her long-standing protest.
